Oxford, Printed by W, Hall for Tho Bowman..., !671. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo, 156 x 97 mms., pp. [viii], 302, including half-title, engraved plates on pages 18 and 19, 24, recently rebound in full antique-style panelled calf, raised bands on spine, black morocco label. A very good copy. The Church of England clergyman Ralph Bohun (1639 - 1716) was also an accomplished meteorologist, having learned much from his time tutoring John Evelyn's son (also John): "After five years in Evelyn's household, 'having well and faithfully performed his charge' (Evelyn, 4.566), Bohun went to reside in New College, and published in Oxford his Discourse concerning the origine and properties of wind: with an historical account of hurricanes, and other tempestuous winds (1671). 'By reason of my residence in a place principally concerned in naval affairs' (Preface), presumably a reference to Evelyn's interests and his house at Deptford, Bohun was enabled to compare the observations of… Read More

In Vinegia Appresso Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, 1560. Large 8vo, 234 x 158 mms., pp. [xxxviii], 1004, with fine historiated initials through out, occasional marginal note in a 17th century owner's hand, that of Marchese Amico, whose autograph appears on the front paste-down end-paper, 19th century half sheepskin, gilt spine, marbled boards (a little rubbed). Remigio Nannini (1521 - 1581) was a respected and respectable Dominican man of letters, busily editing and translating scholarly works and the classics into Italian. He was employed by the publisher precisely to produce cheap (or cheap-ish) versions of classical works. In this work, first published in 1557, he has taken his material almost directly from dozens of sources, many of which have been identified by Nathalie Hester, in "Scholarly Borrowing: The Case of Remigio Nannini's Orationi Militari and Francois de Belleforest's Harangues Militaires," Modern Philology (November, 2003). Belleforest's later book was… Read More

Dickson (born 1834) received his commission on 1 December 1854. This is a reprint of the first authorized edition published in a quarto volume in Paris in 1740 and edited by P. F. G. de Beauchamps. London Printed by S. G. and B. G. [i. e., Sarah and Bennet Griffin] for Jonathan Edwin, at the Sign of the three Roses in Ludgate-Street [no date]. [?1672]. Small 8vo, 146 x 83 mms., pp. [viii], 128 (but with numerous errors in pagination), early 18th century calf, gilt borders on covers, rebacked, with old spine gilt in compartments with red leather label laid down; top 30 mms. of adverts leaf preceding title torn away, spine a bit rubbed and faded, but a very good copy. Rapin (1621 - 1687) proved to be a popular literary theorist, particularly in discussing epics, with British readers, both in English translation and in French. His choice, at the end of the volume of Homer in preference to Virgil was very much in tune with the prevailing models of literary theory at the time. Observations sur les poèmes d'Homère et de Virgile was published in Paris in 1669. It's unlikely that many scholars read George Saintsbury's History of Criticism (1900 - 1904), but his prose… Read More

Who was Rest Knipe? He must have been known to dozens of people in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, because there are 32 pages of subscribers in the two editions of this book; but he seems to have escaped the attention of scholars. Perhaps the most obvious feature of his treatise is the almost completely secular character of the education he prescribes for children and his opposition to a classical education for most boys: "after a boy has been puzzling his poor brains, and been tortured with Latin for several years, it is ten to one, that, comparative speaking, he knows nothing; i. e nothing radical and to the bottom; nothing, in short, but… Read More

The geologist and Church of England clergyman Joseph George Cumming (1812 - 1868) began his studies of the geology and history of the Isle of Man when he became Vice-Principal of King William's College in 1841. He published The Runic and Other Monumental Remains in 1848. A very good copy, with the faint autograph "[?W H] Gage" on the top margin of the title-page. Captain Gage and Lady Gage appear in the list of subscribers. The work is dedicated to Lady Mary Pelham, who is probably the Lady Pelham who appears in the list of subscribers. A Captain Gage and a Lady Gage appear in the list of subscribers as well. No doubt this copy belonged to Sir William Hall Gage (1777-1864), who was Captain by 1796, and was promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1821. There is a record of Gage's uncle and namesake, William Hall Gage, 2nd Viscount Gage (1717/18-1791), being at the house of Frances Burney with John Delap on the same day, and having a "Great Dinner" at night, on June 20, 1779; the viscount was, like Delap, a resident of Lewes in Sussex, which is also the… Read More

Dublin: Printed for the Editor By Boulter Grierson..., 1766. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, 195 x 120 mms., pp. xx, 140, disbound; lacks all 51 plates. Ellen T. Harris, in The Music Lover in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century England (Tufts Digital Library) writes that, 'John Trydell published his Two Essays on the Theory and Practice of Music with the hope of rendering "the knowledge of Music easy; and Composition more practicable than it seems to me it is among us at present." Trydell's strategy for making music easier was to construct a system based on geometrical reasoning (Kassler, p. 1024), in which he took great care, as he put it, "to avoid all obsolete Words, or such as are derived from other languages: and to speak as plain English, as the nature of the Subject would admit, that I may be understood by every English reader."
