Description:
London: George C. Harrap & Co. Ltd, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/good +. Rackham, Arthur. First trade edition, octavo size, 287 pp. The work of Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), an eminent illustrator of many books which often depict fantasy and fairy tale subjects, is still loved and collected today. Rackham contributed illustrations to many popular stories, such as "Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty", "Alice in Wonderland", and the Brothers Grimm fairy tales; in the Preface to this work, Rackham wrote: "[f]or this book I have gone to those old favourites of the nursery that have such a hold on our affections that their incidents, characters, and even phrases have become part of our everyday thought and expression" (p. 7). Included in this volume are: "Hop-O'-My Thumb" (Perrault), "Dick Whittington" (Traditional English), "Jack and the Beanstalk" (ibid), "Beauty and the Beast" (Madame de Villeneuve), "Henny-Penny" (Traditional English), "The Story of Sindbad the Sailor" (The Arabian Nights),… Read More

Description:
South Hampstead [London], 1917. No binding. Near fine. Rackham, Arthur. Original sketch printed to recto only, dimensions: about 7" by 4.5" A wonderful original drawing by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), done in simple, flowing lines, depicting a Civil War-era soldier carrying a flag which seems to be flowing in the breeze; beneath which Mr. Rackham wrote two lines from the poem "John Brown's Body", thus: "John Brown's body lies a-mouldering / in the grave / BUT HIS SOUL GOES MARCHING ON". Beneath is written "with kindest regards [space] Arthur Rackham". The sketch is on letterhead with the printed address of 16, Chalcot Gardens, South Hampstead N.W., with the numeral "3" written next to the address, and the date writted above of "3.4.17" - since Mr. Rackham presumably used the British convention for dating, we assume this means "April 3, 1917". Arthur Rackham married in July of 1903, and although they began their life together at another address (3, Primrose Hill Studios), they "shortly" moved to the… Read More

[Monmouthshire]: The Old Stile Press [2013], 2013. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Kiggell, Ralph. Special Edition, No. I of X, folio size, 52 pp., signed by Ralph Kiggell. The special edition includes a separate suite of woodcuts, titled, numbered (1/10) and signed by Ralph Kiggell, in four colours, that complement but are different from the illustrations in the volume; these illustrations are printed on Japanese paper, with water-based inks and by hand, using a baren, by the artist himself. Both are encased in a custom clamshell box. The title comes from D.H. Lawrence's wonder at "the third thing" that binds an oxygen atom with two of hydrogen. A selection of poems with woodcut images by Ralph Kiggell, all centred about the idea of WATER. Ralph "allowed himself to explore poems and prose - from across different ages and cultures - to inspire the illustration of water as it interacts with landscape, animal and man. Poets and writers have shown us that from sea to land to cloud and back to sea,… Read More

[Risbury, Herefordshire]: The Whittington Press, 2018. First and Limited Edition. Leather bound. Fine. No. 14 of 40 copies of the "A" edition with accompaniments (see below); folio size, 100 pp., in a leather-backed solander case. In his typical fashion, John Randle has done a masterful job presenting insights into the life of Vance Gerry with this extensive bibliography of his printed work. Vance Gerry (1929-2005) was one of California's least known and most accomplished printers, who operated his Weather Bird Press from 1967 to 2005. John Randle, publisher of "Matrix" and accomplished printer in his own right, gives Vance high praise: "Until his death in 2005 he produced a steady stream of the most understated, beautifully printed and ravishingly illustrated books from any private press, ever." Vance studied art at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles and learned the art of storytelling at Walt Disney Productions where he was employed as a storyboard artist. Rockwell Kent considered him "the finest wood engraver in America" and Ward Ritchie would often commission him for his projects (n.b., quote per Wiki). Glasgow: Hugh Hopkins, 1869. Second Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Two volumes (complete), octavo size, 587 pp. Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) was an interesting and, even for his day, unusual man. Described by the DNB as an "antiquarian"; at the age of 20, upon reading the "Fable of the Bees" he decided to "forswear all animal foods, and to subsist solely on milk and vegetables." By trade a "conveyancer", he studied law and became a barrister, employing his leisure time as a writer. Never one to run from an argument, in 1784 he took issue with a publication of "Select Scotish Ballads" by one John Pinkerton, claiming they were modern forgeries - which indeed turned out to be the case. Ritson went on to publish, in 1785, "The Caledonian Muse: a Chronological Selection of Scottish Poetry from the earliest times", and later, after a walking tour through Scotland, publishing in 1794 two volumes of "Scotish Song with the genuine Music". This two-volume set the second edition, published in 1869 in Glasgow;… Read More

Description:
Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire: Jane W. Roberts, 1983. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Greenaway, Kate. No. 83 of 350 copies, twenty-fourmo size, 22 pp., signed by Jane W. Roberts. Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was an artist and writer best known for her illustrations of children's books, many of which contained her own poetry, and this book documents the history of Greenaway's books and designs; it is filled with Greenaway's charming drawings of children, from her book "Marigold Garden", and which were cast by American Type Founders (ATF) at the end of the nineteenth century. The word "Mignonette" was apparently coined by ATF and was derived from the word "mignon", which means "a small, pretty child" in French, and is an apt description of Greenaway's drawings. Jane W. Roberts, a printer and type collector, presents a well-researched history and bibliographer of Greenaway's works, and celebrates the intricacies of the illustrations in this volume. ___DESCRIPTION: Full green cloth, light green paper… Read More

London: Grant Richards, 1902. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Robinson, W. Heath. First printing, octavo size, 135 pp. William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was an exemplary book illustrator and cartoonist, "the only British illustrator to become a 'household name'" (Houfe), a contemporary of acclaimed illustrators Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, best known for his cartoons portraying elaborate and whimsical machinary made to complete simple tasks. In fact, his fame was such that the term "Heath Robinson" was used in the United Kingdom to refer to such machinary, much as the term "Rube Goldberg" was used in the United States. "The Adventures of Uncle Lubin" is a fantastical tale of daring and danger, and is an early example of depictions of the complex machinary for which Robinson would become known; the book is replete with illustrations, often full-page, that bring the story and characters vividly to life. ___DESCRIPTION: Full teal blue cloth, with debossed illustrations in red, grey, and… Read More

William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was an exemplary book illustrator and cartoonist, "the only British illustrator to become a 'household name' " (Houfe), a contemporary of acclaimed illustrators Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac, best known for his cartoons portraying elaborate and whimsical machinary made to complete simple tasks. In fact, his fame was such that the term "Heath Robinson" was used in the United Kingdom to refer to such machinery, much as the term "Rube Goldberg" was used in the United States. This somewhat uncommon calendar (as of this writing, we find one copy in OCLC for this 1935 edition, and none online) presents Robinson's illustrations in a weekly calendar format with the illustrations often geared towards the season; June has several illustrations set on the beaches, December for Christmas and New Year's. ___DESCRIPTION: The individual pages bound between a cardstock "wrapper", the… Read More
