Description:
5, [1] pp.A very important treaty in the history of British imperialism, which show the pragmatic approach of the British in Arabia by signing this treaty, and also in the history of Arabia and Yemen. This treaty probably may have helped perticipate the war between Ibn Saud and the Imam. The Imam felt captured between two parties: the Saudis in the north and the British in the south. He neutralised his relationship with the British by this treaty of friendship and co-operation and although the negotations for this treaty took very long (from 1919 on), the result of the treaty was a temporarily calming down of events. The history shows that the major conflict between the Saudis and Yemenis became, however, inevitable. Neverwithstanding this is a very important artefact in the history of Britain, Saudi-Arabia and Yemen. This copy only contains the English text, but originally this treaty was published in a bilingual edition, the English and Arab text alternating. In very good condition.

Description:
[531], [1 blank] pp.An Italian manuscript chronicle of the Islamic states from 635 to 1453 (from soon after the death of Mohammed to the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire), largely excerpted from Rampoldi's twelve-volume Annali Musulmani. After a brief introduction, the bulk of the text is arranged under headings for the years in chronological order. The watermarks suggest the manuscript was produced around the time Rampoldi's publication was completed. Givanni Rampoldi (1761-1836), a customs official in Milan, learned Arabic in North Africa, Turkey and the Middle East in the 1780s. Though he never took an academic post, he became a leading Islamicist and historian of the Islamic world. He compiled his magnum opus in twelve volumes, published from 1822 to 1826, the most comprehensive history of Islamic states to that time and, in the Enlightenment spirit, unusually free of anti-Islamic prejudice. In very good condition, with only a couple small marginal tears and wholly untrimmed. Description:
22, [2 blank] pp.Very rare pamphlet, printed in Lima, proclaiming the decision of the Canton of Portoviejo (in modern Ecuador) to join the Republic of Greater Colombia. The text was presumably written by the priest and revolutionary Cayetano Ramírez y Fita (1776-1854) and adapted in December 1821. Since the text was printed in Lima and refutations of the text appeared in a Guayaquil newspaper between May and June 1822, it is likely that the pamphlet appeared at the beginning of 1822.As part of the Spanish colonies in South-America, Portoviejo had been an important centre for conquistadors. In October 1820, as the Spanish empire in South-America was disintegrating, Portoviejo joined the other cities in the region of Guayaquil in declaring independence. The future of the region was uncertain as president Simón Bolívar of Colombia considered the region to be part of his state, while a number of movements in Guayaquil advocated joining the Republic of Peru. Portoviejo opposed to the rest of Guayaquil… Read More

XXXIV, 246 pp.French translation of a pioneering ecological treatise and one of the earliest scientific studies on noxious wood insects. It was first published in German as Die Waldverderber und ihre Feinde in 1841, followed by a second expanded edition in 1842. Count Edgar Bourée de Corberon (1807-1861) published his present French translation of the expanded edition in 1842, adding a 21-page preface, some notes to the text and a 21-page French glossary. These valuable additions make the present edition more than a mere translation.Ratzeburg (1801-1871), pioneered the scientific study of the damage or destruction of trees by insects. With Waldverderber und Ihre Feinde he for the first time devoted a separate publication to the subject, with fine steel-engravings. The Waldverderber quickly became a standard work on the subject and appeared in many editions to 1876.l Hagen I, p. 138; Horn & Schenkling 3859 (cf. 17685); cf. [1], [1 blank], [2], 304 pp.First and only edition, in the original Danish, of an account of a journey through the Arabian peninsula. Sponsored by the Royal Danish Geographical Society, Barclay Raunkiaer (1889-1915) set out to penetrate the hitherto unexplored deserts of south-east Arabia. Although he came equipped with a modest amount of scientific instruments and a camera, the use of these became almost impossible. The Arabs looked on foreigners with suspicion and Raunkiaer could use his camera only with great risk at certain unwatched moments (p. 12). At the beginning of 1912, he reached the town of Kuwait, where he stayed at the palace of Sheikh Mubarak. Since it was Mubarak's policy to keep Kuwait free of foreign interference, it took some active lobbying of the British envoy to convince the Kuwaitis that Raunkiaer was a harmless traveller. After that, it seems he enjoyed a certain amount of freedom, as numerous photographs testify, including one of pearl fishers and a portrait of Sheikh… Read More

[35], [1 blank], 202, [26] pp.First issue of the second edition, the first in its definitive expanded form, of one of the earliest botanical classifications, written by the famous English botanist John Ray (1627-1705), the great pre-Linnaean pioneer of classification. "The father of British botany", he first published his floral classification in 1682 as Methodus plantarum nova , but the definitive enlarged form of his systematic classification first appeared in the present second edition of 1703 with a revised title.Ray had completed this new edition by 1698, when he wrote to Dr. Sloane, "as to my methodus emendata it lies by me finished, and ready for the press, but I believe will hardley ever be printed. No bookseller will undertake it." This edition, a great improvement on that of 1682, might never have been published but for the kindness of the professor of botany in Leiden, Dr. Peter Hotton, who arranged for 1100 copies to be printed there, so that he might see it through the press. [16], 121, [1] pp.Rare first and only edition of a treatise on fortification by the Dutch engineer Cornelis Redelykheid (1728-1787). It centres on methods to improve the masonry and composition of strongholds against hostile artillery and mines, and on fortifying vaults against the most powerful bombs. The large engraved plates with measured drawings include a large fortification plan and several cross-sections, profiles and elevations, many showing vaults. Although the imprint is undated, the author's dedication is dated from Amsterdam, 1759. Cornelis Redelykheid (1728-post 1787), son of a Rotterdam mason, worked in his father's shop as a young man. He became a capable hydraulic, mechanical and fortification engineer, working for the province of Holland from 1761. The present book seems not to have been a normal commercial production but a private publication of the author, probably printed in a small number of copies. With owner's signature. Kirilov, but adds new material. Hase's maps, including the large map of the entire Russian Empire, incorporate new discoveries from the Danish explorer Martin Spanberg's two expeditions to Kamchatka (1738 and 1739) with Bering en Tsjirikov, in search of a sea route to Japan, an expedition supported by Peter the Great himself. Homan's heirs in Nürnberg published Hase's map of the Empire separately in 1739, but it appears here printed from a new plate and dated 1743. The book contains 100 plates with 460 originally and extraordinary hand-coloured copper engravings, divided over two volumes with their own half-title ('Histoire naturelle des plus rare curiositez de la mer des Indes'), of 415 fishes, 41 crustaceans, two stick insects, a dugong and even a mermaid, all living in the Indian Ocean between the East Indies. Sometimes the descriptions specifically refer to fishes of some islands in the East Indies, as Ambon, the Moluccas or Buton, but they also contain references to the "fishes of the Antilles, Brazil" (Sabin) and Mauritius. [60], 769, [23] pp.Rare first edition of a collection of three earlier published works of the German alchemist and physician Johann Pharamund Rhumel (1597-1661), translated into German and here incorporating information from two others. They all concern spagyric medicine, a term probably first coined by Paracelsus, referring to a particular alchemical process for extracting medicine from plant material. Rhumel was a devoted follower of Paracelsus. Thorndike discusses his theory of the primal being of gold: "Webster credited Rhumelius with an analogous gold-alone theory and said that he distinguished four states of gold, namely, the astral, mineral, metal and elemental. The first was primal being of the Sun (i.e., gold) and was a great secret. Potable gold made from it was superior to that from perfect common gold. Elemental gold was any earth, mineral or stone wherein the spirit of gold lay hid".Rhumel's earlier publications are extremely rare and the present is the only one commonly referenced. With… Read More
