SIGNED JUSTICE R on the front free end page and thus signed by author Rayne; as Dictrict Commissioner, Rayne was directly responsible to the governor for the administration of justice (divorce, marriage, thievery, homicide) in Ziala District, a region in the north-west of then British Somalia.  This is the first edition of a scarce book that gives an insight into colonial administration in British Somalia early 1900s. Book finishes with an account of author's dealings with the Mad Mullah (1919). That Was the first occasion on which the RAF was used for colonial policing. Group Captain Gordon led a squadron of twelve De Havilland DH9s, transported on HMS Ark Royal.  Book is in GOOD plus condition with 12 plates. The frontispiece is tissue-protected. by Reynoldsfirst editionFirst edition. STATED: First Published in Great Britain 1980. Hard cover. Sheed & Ward, London, England (1980) New in new dust jacket. hard bound 236 pages It was a bloody time in English history. Bloody Mary was dead, Queen Elizabeth 1 was on the throne determined to revoke all Mary's ordinances supporting the Pope and Roman Catholic religion. Her Supremacy bill declared her supreme and made it clear the Pope had no authority in England. The Catholic Lords Bishop refused to take the oath and were put under constraint. Edmund Campion, formerly an Anglican, became a Jesuit missionary, was arrested, hanged, drawn, and quartered. His contemporary, also a Jesuit, fled to the Continent and was assigned the task of directing from abroad the Jesuit mission to England. He died at the English College in Rome. This copy of the book and its jacket are new or indistinguishable therefrom and give an interesting insight into the religious persecution of the day, albeit from the Roman… Read More

Publisher: H.M. Caiserman, 1942Used - Like New, Usually ships in 1-2 business days, Looks about new save for not-very noticeable edge scuffs, feels new, and probably never read. An account of "christian" politicians in Victoria, B.C. trying to exclude Jews from parliament. Author describes the settlement of jews in Victoria in 1849. He reveals how many of the name we associate with the early development of Victoria were anti-semitic either from prejudice or to improve their own lot. He also writes of Jews welcomed into the communuty--one in particular who was secretary to theTiger Company (the firefighters). I have the much-later book, First Water, Tigers for sale.) Rome relates the lection for the legislature when De Cosmos used his paper, The Colonist, to oppose Mr. Selim Franklin. Franklin wone and de Cosmos tried to have 'votes by negroes' declared and failed. Then came the "On the truth as a christian' problem Canada inherited from UK (which the UK had aboilshed). Description:
Just about indistinguishable from new and flat signed "With kind regards Reg Roy." Dust jacket has minor closed tears at back. Reg lived here in Victoria and was a friend with whom I had many chats. He undertook the task of preparing Private Fraser's journal for publication at the request of My. Fraser's daughter Deidre.
In 1906, at the age of 24, Donald Fraser emigrated from Scotland and in November 1914 enlisted as a private in the 31st (Alberta) Battalion as soon as that battalion was formed. Ten months later, the battalion was in France. brigaded with the 6th Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Division of the CEF. Donald was later transferred to the 6th Brigade Machine Gun Company. He participated in the famous battles. His account is lively and at times critical; it has maps of Ypres, St. Eloi, Hooge, Courcelette, Vimy, Fresnoy, and of the Flanders Line and the Western Front. Plus four photo plates (7 photos). He was evidently an educated man able to make keen observations and express himself… Read More
