Charles Adderley was a nineteenth century politician who served in the Cabinets of Lord Derby and Disraeli. He married the eldest daughter of Chandos Leigh who created the great Stoneleigh Library. Perhaps Adderley, who had Hams rebuilt by James Wyatt, was trying to do the same. After Adderley's death, Hams was sold with the new owner dismantling and rebuilding it in the Cotswolds. London: Printed for the Author, and are to be sold by Walter Davis in Amen Corner 1682, 1682. First edition. 8vo (175x114mm). pp. 128 (including initial blank A1). Contemporary black morocco, covers panelled in gilt, spine richly gilt in compartments, marbled pastedowns, all edges gilt. The Heber - Britwell - Hayward - Bradley Martin - Edwards copy, with modern bookplates of H. Bradley Martin and J.O. Edwards. Lightly rubbed with some wear to corners, a little marginal browning, still an excellent copy. Alexander Radcliffe trained in law but deserted his studies to become a soldier, reaching the rank of captain before turning to writing bawdy verse in the tradition of the poetic rake established by the 1680 edition of Rochester's Poems on Several Occasions. The title poem here, Radcliffe's best known work, starts with a knock at the door which the author is in bed with a whore. He embarks on a nightmarish low-life ramble through Restoration London, visiting theatres, gambling dens and… Read More

Description:
London Vizetelly and Co. 1887, 1887. First edition. 1887. Rebound in the late 19th century calf without the original paper covers - this edition was issued in paperbound format only. Full calf with gilt decoration around the edges of the front and back covers. Five raised bands on the spine with gilt decorated compartments. Dark brown leather label in second compartment with title in gilt (mistakenly written as "King Solomon's Wifes"). A fine copy. "This parody on 'King Solomon's Mines' was for many years attributed to Andrew Lang. In 1921, however, writing to the SKETCH in August concerning a caricature of Haggard by 'Maat' which had appeared in its issue for Aug. 3, Ernest Vizetelly gave the name of the author of 'King Solomon's Wives' as Sir Henry Chartres Biron who wrote it when he was a young barrister."

London: Thames and Hudson 1974, 1974. First edition. 264x234mm. pp. 14, 120 black and white photographs. Introduction by Ainslie Ellis. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in gilt with publisher's device to upper cover. Light rubbing to head and foot of spine. Original black and white photo illustrated dust-jacket, text printed in black. Slight toning to spine but otherwise a near fine dust jacket. Internally excellent and overall a very good copy of a seminal work of social commentary. A Day Off was published posthumously in 1972. It is a part-finished study dealing with that favourite subject of the English - social class. Tony Ray-Jones uses images of the English at play - from beauty contests in Margate to the opera at Glyndebourne - to show how we divide along class lines. "I want my pictures to bite like the images in Buñuel's films which disturb you while making you think. I want them to have poignancy and sharpness but with humour on top...My aim is to communicate something… Read More

Cambridge, Massachusetts: The MIT Press 1973, 1973. First edition. 235x286mm. pp. [iv], 124. 110 black and white photographs by Richards with accompanying text for some of the images. Photographic illustrated paper boards. Some bumping to the corners and head and foot of spine but otherwise in very good condition and the contents are excellent. Lacking dustjacket. This is Eugene Richards's first book. It was born out of his work with VISTA, (Volunteers in Service to America) which he joined in 1968. This was a government programme established as an arm of the so-called" War on Poverty." Following a year and a half in eastern Arkansas, Richards helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices, which reported on black political action as well as the Ku Klux Klan. This collection reflects the hardship of life together with the racial and political tensions in this desperately poor part of the southern states. An important document in excellent condition.… Read More

New York and London General Music Publishing Company Inc and Novello and Company Limited. n.d. [1964], 1964. First edition. 307x240mm. pp. 12. Illustrated paper covers. In fine condition. Inside rear cover has the label "From The Library of John K. Martin". The four Lawrence poems are Aware, Thomas Earp, December Night and Quite Forsaken. Vittorio Rieti (1898-1994) began his studies in his native Italy. He had links with Berg and Schoenberg and his early work was influenced by their atonal experimentation. Between 1925 and 1940 he divided his time between Paris and Rome and adopted a more tonal, neo-classical style, writing ballet music for Diaghelev. In 1940, he moved to America where he remained for the rest of his life combining composition with teaching. These Lawrence settings were composed for and dedicated to the Queens College Choral Society where Rieti taught between 1955 and 1960. "Rieti's oeuvre stands apart in its specific clarity, gaiety and sophistication of a kind… Read More

Description:
1974. A original painted glass panel depicting Onan designed by Alan Rose for National Lampoon's December 1974 Issue, Vol. 1, No. 57, entitled "The Judeo-Christian Tradition. The Joy of Sects". 483x358mm. The panel, which is painted to look like traditional church stained glass, shows the figure of a man surrounded by a gothic niche which itself is placed inside a pointed arch. Beneath the human figure is the word "Onan" which identifies the man and explains the leery grimace on his face and the white splashes that surround him. In addition to the white, the glass is painted red, green, blue, yellow and mauve and pink. The edge of the pointed arch is painted with a thick black line. The edges of the glass are protected by tape. There is a small amount of scratching to the glass at the bottom resulting in a slight loss of paint but overall it is in very good condition. Alan Rose described how he made the panel from two sheets of painted glass to create the depth of image. For the Christmas 1974… Read More
