Description:
Nashville, TN: A. M. E. Sunday School Union, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. A collection of speeches by a leading bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the editor of the A.M.E. Church Review, and a tireless campaigner for social justice. "Ransom was torn between two concepts of Christianity: Christianity as an instrument of (possibly bloody) revolution, and Christianity as the means by which the Negro would save democracy and the white man's soul."* This volume of secular speeches, which are influenced by Ransom's Christian beliefs, includes many of his notable orations, including "The Reno Prize Fight," a critique of the white race riots that erupted in response to the black boxer Jack Johnson's defeat of avowed racist James Jeffries in a heavyweight match in 1910. Other speeches include "The Spirit of John Brown", "Martyrdom of John Brown", "Crossing the Color Line", "The Negro As a National Business Asset", and Lynching and American Public Opinion." 175, [1], pages, plus… Read More

Description:
Wanganui, New Zealand: A. D. Willis, Ltd, 1929. Hardcover. Very good. A rare Maori hymnal for the Ratana church. Ratana, a Maori religious, political, and social movement, was founded in 1918 in New Zealand by Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana. He saw a vision and began preaching that the Maori and the Japanese were the lost tribe of Israel. The Ratana church advocated for Maori rights and delegations travelled to England and the US seeking support. Its members also played an important role in New Zealand politics. Early Ratana publications are quite scarce. This book opens with the order of service (15 pages) followed by song lyrics (with the tune noted below each title). The book is not dated, but some of the hymns are and the latest with a year is from 1929. None of the editions of this book appear to be dated. OCLC records only an edition printed by the Wanganui Herald Newspaper Coy, which produced very few books, all between 1930 and 1940. Another edition, with a slightly different title but the same… Read More

St. Louis: Amerika Print, 1919. First Edition. Pamphlet. Good. An offprint from the Fortnightly Review, in which the leading Mexican American historian of his time argues that Native Americans and African slaves were treated better in Spanish America than in the United States. His view of the enslaved people is best expressed by quoting his summary of the situation in 16th century Spanish America, "The Negroes not only retrograded to their original savagery, but dragged the Indians with them." Benjamin Maurice Read (Las Cruces, NM, 1852 - Santa Fe, NM, 1927) was the leading Latino historian in New Mexico. His father, Benjamin Franklin Read, was an American soldier who married a New Mexican, Maria Ignacia Cano. Read became a lawyer and served in the territorial legislature and as speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives. In 1910, he began publishing a series of historical works looking at New Mexico history from the viewpoint of its residents of Spanish origin. His view of history, as a… Read More
