Before dying in poverty in 1840, he produced numerous works on various scientific subjects, making several notable contributions to the field of botany. Black Hawk, Colorado: McKenney's Gallery of Art, [ca. 1870]. Carte-de-visite, albumen print on paperboard mount, 61 x 100 mm overall. A rare photographic trade card for Henry J. Kruse, a German emigre drawn to Colorado in 1860 at the age of 22 by the lure of the gold fields.Failing to strike it rich, Kruse abandoned mining and took up baking, thus launching a career that would see him emerge as a major dealer in dry goods and a force in Colorado Politics. Following his retirement from civic life Kruse took up residence in Denver. He is buried in Central City. Pictured here is Kruse's substantial establishment, occupying two buildings on one city block. One of these is identified as "Colorado Bakery" and signs on the other building read "Wines & Liquor" and "Groceries & Provisions."According to Carl Mautz, William H. Reed and Albert S. McKenney were partners from 1870 to 1874… Read more

Description:
California: J.J. Reilly, [ca. 1876-1886]. Albumen print stereoview, 3.25" x 6" on orange mount, title under images, pink verso. A rare and handsome stereoview photograph of a three-story Italianate-style Chinese restaurant on the corner of San Francisco's Jackson Street. Noted photographer J. J. Reilly was a young Scottish immigrant when he arrived in California in 1856. After volunteering in the Union Army, he became a U.S. citizen in 1866. Well-known for his Yosemite and other California scenic stereoviews, Reilly frequently moved his business but nevertheless retained the series-title "Views of American Scenery" between 1871 and 1886. According to Paul Hickman's 1985 article in Stereo World, "From 1876 to 1886 all of Reilly's stereographs were trimmed in a new Bergner cutter. The resulting prints were larger and had an Adamsesque arch of squatter proportions"-as does this view of the Chinese Restaurant. CONDITION: Very good, strong tonality, slight wear at extremities of mount.

Description:
Dedham, [Mass.]: H. Mann, July 8, 1808. 8vo pamphlet, printed wrappers, bound with thread. 16 pp. A passionate oration on liberty and independence, and a call to defend American rights against corruption and avarice. Richardson states "In the catalogue of our rights, that of electing our rulers, though in itself a burden, takes a high rank. Responsibility is a barrier to oppression. When rulers are subject to the laws, and responsible for their conduct, and the people vigilant and discerning, the laws will equally protect the rights of all, and the government will be administered with an eye to the public good...But the abuse of this right is almost as dangerous to the public liberty as its loss. The wisdom that discerns, the patriotism that desired, and the spirit and energy that pursued the public good, are essential requisites in a public character. But when a people, poisoned by calumny, and deluded by falsehood, elect to office those who flatter their vanity, inflame their passions, and mislead… Read more
