Description:
Dedham, [Mass.]: H. Mann, July 8, 1808. 8vo pamphlet, printed wrappers, bound with thread. 16 pp. A passionate oration on liberty and independence, and a call to defend American rights against corruption and avarice. Richardson states "In the catalogue of our rights, that of electing our rulers, though in itself a burden, takes a high rank. Responsibility is a barrier to oppression. When rulers are subject to the laws, and responsible for their conduct, and the people vigilant and discerning, the laws will equally protect the rights of all, and the government will be administered with an eye to the public good...But the abuse of this right is almost as dangerous to the public liberty as its loss. The wisdom that discerns, the patriotism that desired, and the spirit and energy that pursued the public good, are essential requisites in a public character. But when a people, poisoned by calumny, and deluded by falsehood, elect to office those who flatter their vanity, inflame their passions, and mislead… Read More

Illustrated throughout [with] 2 letters, 4 pp. of manuscript on 2 leaves, 9" x 6"; portrait of Riis clipped from a magazine affixed to half-title. The autobiography of social reformer Jacob Riis, along with two letters from Riis to influential Ellis Island immigration doctor Victor Safford. First published in 1901, this is a 1902 printing. Riis's autobiography begins with his youth in Denmark (including his initially one-sided bond with his beloved wife Elizabeth), and his many struggles and ventures after emigrating to New York as a young man. A fiercely successful immigrant, Riis came to prominence in 1890 with the publication of How the Other Half Lives, his exposé of life in the immigrant slums of New York, illustrated with reproductions of his own photographs. Description:
Cumberland County, PA: C. D. Rishel, Publisher, 1890. 8vo, printed tan wrappers. 84 pp. Advertisements on both sides of back wrapper. Scarce account of the life of an infamous Pennsylvania criminal who dodged the law for years and purportedly wrote these stories on his deathbed in jail. David Lewis, known as "Davy" or "Robber" Lewis (1790-1820), became known as the "Robin Hood of Pennsylvania" for his brand of crime. Born in Carlisle, Lewis cut his teeth as a counterfeiter and later turned to highway robbery. There are countless stories of Lewis 'robbing the rich to give to the poor,' many of which are doubtless more myth than credible history. Nevertheless, there are several contemporaneous newspapers that do portray Lewis as aiding and befriending the downtrodden, who frequently helped him run from the law. Arrested several times, Lewis broke out of jail repeatedly. This pamphlet begins with historical accounts of Cumberland, Bedford, and Centre counties in Pennsylvania, and describes the… Read More
