Description:
1884. With Illustrations by E.A. Abbey, Percy MacQuoid and Joseph Nash. London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. 32 pp ads dated Sept 1884. Original red cloth decorated in black. First Edition of this collection of fourteen short "good stories" -- about twenty pages each, on average. One of the more amusing -- or enraging, depending on one's point of view -- is "Exchange of Animals," where, opposite an illustration of a woman held with a leash on an auction block (this book was published two years before THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE, which would open with a very similar event), a man says, Gentlemen, I have to offer to your notice my wife... It is her wish as well as mine to part for ever, and will be sold without reserve to the highest bidder. Gentlemen, the lot now offered for competition has been to me a bosom serpent. I took it for my comfort and the good of my house; but it became my tormentor, a domestic curse, a night invasion, and a daily devil. The Lord deliver us from termagant wives, and… Read more

Description:
1923. Pictured by Frederic Remington. New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1923. Original paper-covered boards with pictorial onlay, with brown cloth spine. First Edition of this sizeable volume (over 12 inches tall) of Native American tales by Hamlin Garland -- profusely illustrated with 35 full-page plates by Frederic Remington -- of which three are in color. Most of these illustrations had appeared in Harper's Weekly or in Harper's Magazine during the 1890s; some of them had subsequently appeared in novels by other authors, as well. This copy is from the first printing, with the appropriate (December 1923) Harper date-code on the copyright page. It is in FINE condition, with the exception of a few small holes in the cloth joints -- a common problem with this hefty book. Included is the scarce brown-paper dust jacket, on which is affixed the same color plate that appears at p. 116; the jacket is FINE except for being price-clipped.

Description:
1866. With Two Designs by D.G. Rossetti. London: Macmillan and Co., 1866. Original green cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of Christina Rossetti's second book, published four years after GOBLIN MARKET. The title verse is a romantic allegory on the "Sleeping Beauty" theme, only in this case the Prince arrives too late. Christina had these verses ready for publication in 1865, but her brother Dante Gabriel caused it to be postponed by not getting around to creating the two illustrations. She held up publication for the sake of the illustrations because, as she wrote to him, "Your protecting woodcuts help me to face my small public." (Actually he was to provide three woodcuts, but when Macmillan finally got two they could wait no longer, and went ahead and issued the book). He tried to squeeze an advance out of Macmillan, pleading "Now couldn't you be a good fairy & give her something down for this edition, -- say 100 pounds? You know she is a good poet, & some day people will know it.… Read more

Description:
1857. being the Substance (with Additions) of Two Lectures delivered at Manchester, July 10th and 13th, 1857. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1857. Original light olive cloth printed with a facsimile of the title page. First Edition. This title was issued as a volume in Smith Elder's "New Cheap Series," and unfortunately is in a very flimsy binding. The title page is reproduced upon the front cover, and the rear cover (like the endpapers) is occupied by ads. This is a near-fine copy, with a little bubbling of the cloth (as usual with flexible boards) but with remarkably little wear -- quite uncommon condition for this book. Wise (Ruskin) 71.
