Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1881. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. With 3 folding maps and 2 full-page plates. Contemporary cloth, title in gilt on spine (somewhat faded); interior very good. First American edition of this interesting work on the development of Western Canada. Rae traveled west to Manitoba from eastern Canada across Lake Superior to Winnipeg. This work contains his letters contributed to The London Times (for whom he was a correspondent) during his two visits to the New West, as well as new accounts of his travels and observations. Details of the agriculture and mineral riches of the land, the organization of local government, and the history and architecture of various cities and provinces make this travelogue an interesting read. He also discusses the potential of western growth, and a most fascinating supplement contains a discourse on the weeds of North America. Rae (1835-1905) was a Scottish-born author and English barrister.

Description:
London: [n.p.], 1914. List provided upon request. The Royal Institution of Great Britain was founded in 1799 and has had a long and fruitful role both in scientific research and scientific communications. Some of the scientists from the Royal Institution include Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday in the first half of the nineteenth century, through to the earliest of the fifteen Nobel laureates at the Institution: J.W. Strutt, J.J. Thomson, Rutherford, W.H. and W.L. Bragg, and H.H. Dale in the first half of this century. In 1826, Faraday instituted the Friday Evening Discourses designed to aid in the dissemination of science to a wider scientific audience. These continue to this day, and along with afternoon lecture courses have provided a platform for the major scientific figures of the day to discuss their work. Discourses varied from describing work in progress through to the announcement of new discoveries, often before their publication elsewhere. Since 1851, Friday Evening Discourses have been…

Description:
New York: Harper and Brothers, 1864. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. Folding map plus 28 text illustrations. Publisher's original cloth, spine faded with very small tear at bottom; some browning on the first few (blank) leaves, otherwise an excellent copy. First American edition. At the age of 25, the author traveled to Africa using for the most part his own funds. He spent several months observing gorillas in South Africa and Angola, and provides some of the earliest depictions of gorillas and their habits, only a few years after the publication of Paul Du Chaillu's description of the first sighting of a living gorilla by a western explorer. In addition to gorillas, he describes the people, culture, and way of life in Western Africa, with chapters covering cannibalism, the slave trade, fever and malaria, Sierra Leone, drugged elephants, Niger, the Congo and more. A popular success, the book helped to create the popular notion that Africa, the "dark" continent, was replete with savage beasts as well as…
