The first work of the five, "Vestigi della Antichita", has Rococo allegorical illustrations on both the title and dedication pages, and in addition to its 50 plates, three additional engraved folding plates by Étienne Dupérac have been bound in. "Le Fontane" has two engraved dedication pages, both richly illustrated, in addition to 45 view plates. Final suite of eight plates includes a plate folding both on bottom and side. Six leaves within with vibrantly colored perforated cut-outs meant to stand up and give a dimensionality to the illustrations of six nursery rhymes: "Where are you going, my pretty maid?", "Old King Cole", "Barber, Barber", "Sing a Song of Sixpence", "Jack Spratt and His Wife", and "Mary, Mary". All the plates are bright and the cut-outs intact and untouched. Other than light wear of the wraps, pristine.

Paris: Printer: Fehrenbach & Cie., August 30, 1936. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. 4to. 31 by 23.5 cm. Unpaginated, 28 pp., plus wraps. 14 mounted racy color plates, showing comely women in various stages of dishabille, as befitting a promotion produced by a lingerie company. OCLC First Search indicates just two institutional holdings of this -- the Met Museum and in Berlin. Condition: light soiling and wear on cover. One minor edge closed tear and a few light crease marks on front cover. One of the plates now loose -- an easy fix.

Bergamo: Mazzoleni, 1825. Half Morocco. Marbled boards. Custom slipcase. . Very Good. Folio, 31 by 23 cm. 328 pp. Aquatint portrait, 62 hand-colored plates. Lipperheide Be 29. This book is in a larger format than the French original of 1796. This is tantamount to a large paper edition of the original. Custom slipcase with morocco trim, patterned paper pastedown. Modern half red morocco binding. Condition: slip case with some separation of a few edges. Repair to joints. Some foxing on paper, but overall, remarkably clean given the paper stock used at the time in Italy. One long closed tear repaired, and a few shorter tear repairs.

Paris: Chez Deroy, 1796. Quarter Calf, Speckled Boards. Very Good. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. Two frontises (one with engraving, other hand-colored plate), title, [2], 221, [3] pp. With 50 hand-colored aquatint plates, the most exciting not merely costume but showing military and equestrians on move or in action. (And first frontis is B/W.) Colas 1298. The timing of the publication was significant -- it was the fourth year of the Directoire, and so noted on the title. Revolutionary France drew inspiration from Ancient Rome in terms of its republicanism, its muscular outlook, and its aesthetics (although this was a trend that certainly predated the Revolution). Note that this work is encountered without coloring most often. Moderate wear to the binding, and scattered light foxing and soiling within.

Paris. Box. Very Good Plus. A suite of 23 dazzling color plates of Japanese vases produced with a novel "pochoir"-like process around 1840. Each measures 46.5 by 35.5 cm, and in a small cursive handwritten note on the title page, the prints are described as "aquarelles miniatures", which happens to be the term Beauvalet used for his process. Beauvalet published a book in 1835 entitled "Aquarelle-Miniature Perfectionnee reflets metallique et chatoyans et peintre a l'huile sur velous en six leons," and in this book he speaks of a process of mixing watercolors which were to be successively applied to paper in a stencil process -- tantamount to what is now known as pochoir. Title vignette has rose coloration augmenting black and white. Wrap covers bound in. Light wear and soil to cover. Interior tight, clean.

Interior clean and bright.

Beautiful pochoir coloring of illustrations contained in text. 4to. 26 by 17 cm. 141, [3] pp. Beautiful decorated morocco, by Princevel (?), with floral onlays in corners of boards and on spine, onlay bands around around perimeter, crimson doublures with gilt ruling surrounds, etc. Silk moire free endpapers, , marbled paper pastedown succeeding two pages. Condition: heavily rubbed along joints. Corners and edges also rubbed. Scattered foxing, and at times, quite conspicuous.

Nine leaves of heavy card, each with brilliant illumination and original artwork (some pencil and ink), all framing rather flat pietistic-themed photos of artwork. Happily the original contribution of the amateur illuminator Ada Samoda dominates the page. The illumination is more or less standard in its subject matter -- a Gothic window frame, intertwined vines, etc. -- but is a fine example of Victorian era amateur illumination, with rich reds, blues, greens in addition to gilt, and meticulous actualization of foliate patterns of an impressive variety. Also worked in are expressions written in elaborate calligraphy, all of which is faithful to the pre-printing press tradition. Featured are the Dalmatian, the Mastiff, the Great Dane, the Airedale, etc. The chapter on the use of Airedales during World War One, then ensuing, is particularly interesting, as is the more general discussion of dogs' contributions to the war effort. Clean and tight. Dampstain on rear board, about two by one inch, and a little other minor soiling.

Very Good. 4to. 103 pp, with 48 colored lithographic plates, mostly with peasent costumes from Dalarna, Helsingland, Lappland, Södermanland, Westergöthland, Småland, Blekinge and Skåne, but also genre scenes and a few of architectural interest. Some light occasional foxiing, but generally clean and plates would all be of frameable quality. Binding is tight. Corners and edges have wear. Overall very good copy of a delightful and charming costume plate book.

Circa 1900. 14 pp, 28 plates, each measuring 17 by 13 inches, or 44 by 34 cm, a few in color. Half leather, a pebbled calf, over marbled boards and marbled moire endpapers inside. Leather has considerable rubbing, with rawness in corners and along gutters. Small loss at extremities of spine. Interior tight, plates clean, with age toning. A good plus copy.
