Description:
LONDON: L REEVE & CO., 1878 Parts III, IV and V of this rare work as issued in the publisher's paper wraps. With 24 (8 per part) colour printed plates from drawings by Eleonora Wilson. The whole work has 40 plates. Part III has pages 113-176, IV 177-240, and V 241-367 including the index to the whole work and with a publisher's catalogue. The text pages are largely unopened. The wraps are understandably worn and the wrap for part V is disintegrating. Internally there is some initial spotting to the first text page or so in each part but otherwise it is clean. The plates are clean and bright. Part III is dated 1878, and Parts IV and V 1879. An interesting insight into how the work was published.

Description:
The Hague: Petrum van Cleef, 1766 A good to very good copy of the first edition of this extremely rare work by the naturalist Peter Simon Pallas (1741-1811). This is one of his earliest works, drawing on collections in Dutch museums. It includes several vertebrates which were at that time unknown to science. Complete with 14 detailed and beautifully executed folding black and white plates drawn by the Dutch artist J J Bylaert, and decorative head and tailpieces. With title page with engraving of an owl, dedication, preface, text and corrigenda (244 pp), and folding plates. The binding is of worn but sound marbled boards with red label to spine (possibly contemporary or slightly later and possibly German/Dutch). All page edges red. Internally there is a little ink inscription to the bottom of the fep and occasional pencil annotation. The first plate has some creasing to the outer margin. There is a slight ink mark at the page edge of p219 which affects the edges of pages through to the first plate.… Read More

LONDON AND NEW YORK: George Routledge and Sons A good to very good copy in original sage green decorative cloth binding with 8 colour printed plates by Edmund Evans. Aeg. Undated (the book was first published in 1859) but probably late 1870's/early 1880's. The binding has a beautiful bouquet in gilt on the front board together with a gilt border, and a gilt decorated spine. The boards have bevelled edges. The binding is very bright - there is damage to the cloth at the corners - particularly the bottom corner of the front board, and a little pulling at the spine. Internally the book is very clean and sound. There is a faint signature on the top of the fep. There is a little light brown marking affecting the borders of some plates.

Description:
London: George Samouelle, 1841 A good copy of the 2nd edition in 2 volumes in buckram cloth bindings, with 156 hand coloured plates from drawings by the author. George Samouelle was employed as a Keeper at the British Museum in the entomology collections for 19 years. He is best known for his Entomologist's Useful Compendium (which he later expanded and republished under a different title). The work was much used and commended by other well known entomologists such as John Curtis and William Spence. The Entomological Cabinet was issued in parts (a way of raising income for publication) with work on it starting in 1829. The first edition was published in 1833/34. There were plans for a second issue - but there was not enough interest. The 2 parts that were issued were incorporated in the second edition. The bindings are clean and sound - they are not recent, but they are not contemporary. Each has gilt titles to the spine. There is light rubbing mainly on the boards next to the spine and towards the… Read More

Description:
London : John Wilcox and Thomas Heath, 1729 A very good copy of a scarce work on Mathematics by Samuel Cunn, revised by Edmund Stone, with black and white frontispiece and large folding plate. Cunn is best known for his translation of Euclid's work in to English, and in 1720 he published a 'corrected' edition of Newton's Arithmetica Universalis. Edmund Stone's history is not recorded, other than he was the son of the gardener for the Duke of Argyll's estates. Apparently the Duke discovered him reading Newton's Principia and so sponsored his academic career. His Treatise on Mathematical Instruments was published in 1723 and in 1725 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. His book 'A New Mathematical Dictionary' was published in 1726. It was in part derived from Latin versions of the works of the German philosopher Christian Wolff.
This copy has been recently rebound in half leather and buckram. There are gilt lined raised bands to spine and gilt titles. New… Read More

Description:
London: T Cadell Jun. and W Davies, in the Strand, 1802 A very good copy of Martin Sauer's account of the Joseph Billings expedition to Northern Russia. Commodore Billings was commissioned by Catherine the Great to head the expedition, which took nine years, returning in 1794 with extensive data and mapping from the region, and enhanced knowledge of local populations. Martin Sauer was the Secretary and translator and agreed to join the party on the basis that he could write and publish an account of the travels. This he did when he came to England and it forms the first and only English edition. It relies mainly on the official journal and his own notes. This copy is in a new half calf binding with marbled boards. The spine has a title label and decorative gilt ruled bands. New endpapers. Contents: half title; large folding map; title; preface pp vii-xiv; explanations xv-xvi; contents xvii-xxvi; errata - 1p; text pp 1-332 with 14 black and white plates; appendices pp 1-58; The End. Description:
London : Lovell Reeve, 1856 A very good to near fine copy of the rarest title in Lovell Reeve's Popular History series. Seemann was a botanist who made his name when he was appointed naturalist (on the recommendation of W J Hooker) to HMS Herald for the Kellett voyage of exploration to the American West Coast and Pacific. The series, aimed primarily at younger readers as an informed introduction to natural history, varies greatly in the quality of its authors as the publishers set strict budget limits on publication costs. In recent quarter leather binding with raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt titles to spine and marbled boards. New endpapers. With 20 high quality colour printed plates. 17 x 13.5 cms. There is browning to page edges and the odd light mark, but otherwise this is a very good internally. A lovely book.

Description:
London: Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1817 A very good copy in later full morocco binding with 30 hand coloured plates and accompanying text by Miss Semple. Dated from the publisher's note at the base of each plate - there is no date on the title page. The text provides a commentary to the plates and gives a sense of her journey around the Netherlands and how the plates came to be drawn. The full red morocco binding is probably late 20th century and mimics the design of the original publisher's cloth binding with a leather and gilt title label to the front board. The endpapers were replaced at the same time and have a tape reinforcement at the joints, which looks contemporary with the rebinding. The binding is in very good clean condition with some bumping to the top corners. Contents: half title with small ink signature to top; decorative title page with hand coloured vignette; and alternating text pages and full page plates. The text is in English and French. The half title has lost… Read More

London and New York : William Heinemann and Doubleday, Page & Co, 1929 A good copy in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 40 tipped-in colour plates and black and white illustrations and designs by Arthur Rackham. First published with Rackham illustrations in 1908, the work proved extremely popular and there were numerous reprints. The binding has nice bright boards. There is a very small mark on the front board. The spine is a little faded and marked. There is a little pulling to the spine and slight bumping to board corners. There is part of a wrapper for Midsummer Night's Dream loose inside the book but it looks slightly too small to have been the original wrapper for this book. There is a small ink inscription - Christmas 1935. To Peter with much love from Lorna' at the bottom of the fep.
