Charles Major, (1869 - 1938) a school master who keen on military matters from a young age and in 1897 founded the College Rifles Volunteers, serving with distinction in the Boer War where he was made a Colonel. He returned to Auckland and bought the King's College property in Remuera and then the property at Middlemore which was completed while he was serving in the First World War, in 1917.
