London: William Harrison Ainsworth..., 1828. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 184 x 106 mms., pp. '[iv], 94, uncut, original red boards; boards worn, spine defective, front cover detached. The author and journalist Samuel Laman Blanchard (1803 - 1845) had an inauspicious start to life, being unable to complete his university education when his father's finances deteriorated. After a few desultory excursions into literature and journalism, he decided to become an actor, but working in the provinces cured him of that and, penniless, he walked back to London. This, his first book, is dedicated to Charles Lamb. Thackeray described his appearance as being that of a mixture of Voltaire and Mendelsohn. Grignion) title-page in addition to printed title-page in each volume, handsomely bound in full contemporary red morocco, with gilt panels on each cover, gilt dentelles, spines richly gilt in compartments, morocco labels, all edges gilt. A fine and attractive set. D. F. C. P. C. are the initials for the French scholar Francois Cheminant, who prepared the text for this edition.

A Paris, Chez Saintin, Libraire..., 1813. FIRST EDITION. 2 volumes. Small, rectangular 8vo, 120 x 88, pp. [iv], 107 [108 blank], xcv [xcvi blank]; [iv], 106 [107 - 108 Table], xciv, engraved frontispiece in volumes and 31 other attractive and interesting engraved plates contemporary half calf, marbled boards, gilt spines. A very good set. These two volumes, with quite a bit of emphasis on the Aborigines of Australia, have very good engravings, but how much of a contribution to ethnography they make is difficult to assess. All of the plates seem to derive from a great variety of previous images, and one has probably to be slightly sceptical about their authenticity. For example, California is represented by a plate that seems more appropriate to a location in South America.

Aere: EXandebant J. & P. Wilson, 1808. 12mo (in 6s), 140 x 84 mms., pp,.[3] 4 - 124, attractive bound in contemporary lightly mottled calf, gilt border and gilt coat of arms on each cover, gilt spine; base of spine and gilt ornament on rear cover wormed. This is a very rare Scottish book printed by the firm responsible for the printing of the famous Kilmarnock edition of Burns of 1796. The printers are the brothers John and Peter Wilson of Ayr, pioneering figures of the book trade in Ayrshire, on whom see Carreen S. Gardner, Printed in Ayr and Kilmarnock: Newspapers, Periodicals, Books and Pamphlets Printed from about 1780 until 1920 (1976), p. 11. Gardner notes, about John Wilson, that "[u]ndoubtedly the most famous work printed by Wilson in Kilmarnock was the first edition of the poems of Robert Burns in July 1786" (ibid.). "A vigorous account of the notorious conspiracy of Catiline in 63 B.C. to overthrow the civil power in Rome, Sallust's Catiline is one of the best histories in Latin literature. The narrative is vivid and consistent, and the sketches of character are admirable in their power and conciseness. Although the author obviously hated the democratic party with which Catiline was connected, and had no great admiration for Cato or Cicero, his work is wonderfully impartial. A fine set, with very fresh impressions of the (often erotic) plates. The Swiss painter Salomon Gessner (1730-1788) began life as an apprentice to a bookseller in Berlin, seeming to follow in the footsteps of his father, a bookseller, printer, and publisher. This is certainly one of the most attractive editions of Gessner's works, even in a French translation. Gessner was responsible for choosing the illustrations, and the erotic overtones of many of the engravings perhaps enjoyed a more robust reception in this French translation. THe poet and school teacher Samuel Bishop (1731 - 1795) wrote a number of poems but published very few in his lifetime. A fine quarto edition was published in 1796 after his death, edited and produced by Thomas Clare, who married Bishop's widow. His observations on religion are trite, and only a repetition of what has frequently been said by others in a much more pleasing manner." . A manuscript volume of 35 leaves, the pages numbered 1 to 70, being a contemporary manuscript of the second part of Colville's popular seventeenth-century poem. The leaves measure 192 x 142 mms., with one blank leaf preceding the numbered leaves, which have manuscript text on both recto and verso. The hand is clear and legible, and the text has been bound in contemporary sheepskin, with gilt panels on both covers and gilt thistles within the panels, plus gilt thistles, projecting diagonally, at each of the eight corners of the two gilt panels on the front and back covers. The binding is in poor condition and has been crudely rebacked at some stage, with the latter part of the volume being difficult to open without cracking at the inner margin (gutter). A shelf mark, "B2.76," appears on the front paste-down endpaper, and loosely inserted is a folded, undated note in a 20th century hand citing several late seventeenth-century printed editions of Colville's poetry. � A verse… Read More

[?Philadelphia] [c.1800]. These embroideries are possibly the work of Samuel Folwell (1764 - 1813), the American miniaturist, silhouettist, engraver, and hair worker. In any case, they are very much in the style of needlework and embroideries produced by Folwell and his wife, Ann Elizabeth Gebler Folwell. In the first embroidery, Emma sits contentedly under a tree holding a garland of flowers, with a basket of flowers at her feet. She wears a long flowing white gown, and her long curly hair (very much in the style of the 1790s) is decked out with flowers. In the background is a road and gate leading to a farm house. The second picture is a fine example of the iconography of mourning so popular in America after the death of George Washington in 1799. In this one, a forlorn woman sits under a tree in front of a tombstone which reads "In Memory of Emma Corbett." Garth published The Dispensary in 1699, and as the website for The Royal College of Physicians notes, " his satirical poem in six cantos, mocking some of the key protagonists in the dispute.
