Sadtler, American chemist, trained at Pennsylvania College (where he later taught, 1871-4), became in 1908 the first President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He took a position at the University of Pennsylvania as professor of chemistry, 1874-91. From there he went to the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy to continue teaching till retirement. His son, of the same name, joined him to establish a firm, Samuel P. Sadtler & Son. Ruth Sager (1918-1997), American geneticist, chiefly noted for recognizing the importance of nonchromosomal genes. While at the Rockefeller Institute, Sager began to question the traditional belief that all the genes governing heredity were to be found arranged linearly on the chromosomes of cell nuclei. In 1953 she discovered in the alga Chlamydomonas a second genetic-transmitting system: not located on the chromosomes of the alga. This gene governs the cell's sensitivity to the antibiotic streptomycin. Her experiments showed that the many nonchromosomal genes in Chlamydomonas could be passed on by either partner in sexual reproduction, that they controlled a variety of hereditary characteristics, and that they replicated and remained active through successive generations. "The hospital was established at home of Armstrong Todd, a surgeon, in Great Marylebone Street as the Hospital for Stone and Diseases of the Urinary Organs in 1860. It moved to Berners Street and became the St Peter's Hospital for Stone in 1863. It moved again, this time to a purpose-built facility in Henrietta Street, designed by J. M. Brydon in the Queen Anne style . . . It closed in 1948. / The hospital joined with St Paul's Hospital to form the Institute of Urology in 1948. The Institute was joined by St Philip's Hospital in 1952 and the hospitals became known as 'the three Ps.' After services were transferred to the Middlesex Hospital the Institute closed in 1992.
