New York: P.J. Kenedy & Sons, 1875. Mary Anne (Madden) Sadlier (1820-1903) wrote some sixty novels. Married to the prominent Irish Catholic publisher (who published his wife's work), she was pro-Catholic and sympathetic to the nationalist cause . Oddly, this was first published by Dufy in Dublin (1855,) and by Kenedy a year later. This is a Near Fine copy of a Later Printing. There is no publication date, so Quercus has rather arbitrarily assigned it to 1875. Light green cloth binding. Ruled in black on the front cover, with titling and decorative shamrocks in a darker green; the same treatment is on the spine. Clean text; vi, 391 pages. There is a tiny bookseller stamp on the Title Page, else a Fine copy. No dustjacket; in an archival plastic protector.. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

New York: A.L. Burt Company, Publishers, 1898. Agnes Sadlier (b. 1860) wrote several popular histories such as this one. She wrote from a Roman Catholic perspective (and her work was praised by "The Catholic Times"). Originally published in 1884. This is a Very Good (Minus) copy of a the First American Edition. Part of Burt's series of "One Syllable" histories for children (although these books were also used by immigrants). It is "Copiously illustrated." Green cloth decorative binding; the front cover has a blindstamped illustration of a prisoner (presumably Irish!) chained in the dock. Filled with red, black, and brown. Clean text; 203 pages; "copiously illustrated.". Light soil; colors still bright. Previous-owner name penned to FFEP. Quercus awards a minus grade because it has cracked at the FFEP and the rear gutter is starting. Although not truly a binding copy, Quercus advises some minor reinforcement to preserve the volume. . New York & Montreal: D. & J. Sadlier & Co., 1879. First published in 1861; this is a Very Good copy from a Later Printing..Despite Mrs. Sadlier's popularity, this title is uncommon. Green cloth binding, deoratively blindstamped with the designation "Parlor & Cottage Library." Titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; iv, 316 pages. Frontis illustration, and with a charmingly illustrated half-title. Bumping and rubbing to the margins; gilt on spine remains nicely bright. Page ends darkened, and with some stains from pages 22 to 27. The gutters have cracked, but have been reinforced with linen tape. These faults do not keep it from being a basically sound copy.. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition; originally published in a periodical, "The American Celt.". Scarce. Green cloth binding, stamped rather typically with an Irish harp, and filled with gilt. Spine is spomewhat darkened, but the gilt lettering is legible.There is no publication date, but the Preface, dated 1855, is accepted by bibliographers. Clean text; 387 pages. London & Glasgow: Cameron & Ferguson, 1880. Mary Anne (Madden) Sadlier (1820-1903) wrote some sixty novels. Married to the prominent Irish Catholic publisher (who published his wife's work), she was pro-Catholic and sympathetic to the nationalist cause; she wrote in several genres. Despite her popularity, her work is surprisingly uncommon today. The First Edition of this novel was in 1860; this is a Very Good (minus) copy of what is probably a Later Printing. With no publication date, a bibliographer sourced in Copac guesses at 1882; Quercus assumes 1880 as perfectly reasonable as well. Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped with the title in gilt on cover and spine. The text is clean of marking, but there are some smudges scattered about. A previous-owner has stamped his name faintly in three places. The corners are bumped and the rear gutter has split. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Later Printing.. Decorative Cloth. Chillicothe, O.: Ely, Allen & Looker, 1850. An Anglo-Irish graduate of TCD, Blennerhasset (1765-1831) emigrated to America, presumably to excape arrest either as a member of the United Irishmen., or for his incestuous marriage. He became involved with Burr's possible treasonous ploting of 1806 (his large estate, now a state park, was evidently a headquarters for Burr). This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition, which is not common. Dark brown decorative cloth binding, heavily blindstamped. The title on the spine is gilt, as is the Blennerhassett coat-of-arms on the front cover. Clean text; 239 pages. The text is exceptionally bright and fresh, easily readable today. The corners are bumped slightly, and there are several small chips, to the head of the spine, the lower front cover, and on the rear panel. Paris: Gallimard, 1946. One of the most famous and popular children's books of the Twentieth Century. First published in 1943, just prior to the war hero author's (presumed) death. This is a Very Good copy of an early French printing. Softcover, with the illustrations, some in color, by the author. 93 pages. Some expected edgewear; pages lightly toned; the spine has been rubbed, with a tear and some chipping. . Later Printing. Soft Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. 48mo - over 3" - 4" tall.

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1939. French poet and aviator Antoine de Saint Exupery (1900-1944) wrote "The Little Prince," one of the most loved children's books of the 20th Century. This memoir of life as a mail pilot won the National Book Award for non-fiction in 1939. He died in North Africa while serving in the Free French Air Force. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American edition. Translation from the French by Lewis Galantiere; decorations by John O'H. Cosgrave II. Blue patterned cloth binding with a black spine; gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Illustrated endpapers. Clean text; 306 pages,very fresh and bright. New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., 1942. This omnibus collects three of Saint-Exupery's great works: "Wind, Sand and Stars," "Night Flight," and "Flight to Arras." This is a Fine copy. Dark blue cloth binding, with titling on the spine in gilt. Clean text; 437 pages. The dustjacket is Very Good. It is price-clipped and shows some edgewear, mainly with chips to the head and foot of the spine. Some fading, mostly to the spine. In an archival plastic protector. Boston & Toronto: Little, Brown, 1963. These two novellas by Jerome David Salinger (1919-2010) first appeared in "The New Yorker" (1955 & 1959) and this First publication in book form was spectacularly successful. This is a Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy of the First Edition (Third Issue). Greenish-gray cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean and fresh text; 248 pages. Previous-owner signature and chop on the FFEP; perhaps a hint of fade at the margins, else Fine. The dustjacket is complete and unclipped, but with light edgewear, some fade to the spine, and three small chips. In a plastic protector. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. London: William Owen, 1759. The Title Page continues "Their Mariages, Issue, Descennts, and immediate Ancestors; the Posts of Honour and Profit they hold in the Govenment; their Arms, Mottos, and Chief Seats. With an Index, Specifying the Time of their respective Creations, and Summons to Parliament; the Titles of their Eldest Sons; their Rank, Precedence, &c." The author is Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) who also published volumes on the English and Scottish nobility and was an editor of the "State Trials." This is a disbound copy of the First Edition. The leather covers are present but loose, as is the first endpaper. The textblock is still attached to the leather spine, which has five raised bands and an embossed title. Clean text; very bright and fresh; 272 pages, with a six-page index and a one-page publisher's advert in the rear. The Title Page has an embossed chop from an English library. New York: Knopf, 1943. This is a Very Good Minus copy of the "B'nai Brith Hillel Foundations Edition" (issued two months after the First Edition). Gray cloth binding with blindstamped decoration, filled with red. There is a small stain on the upper edge of the front board. Clean text; 331 pages (for a wartime edition, the paper is surprisingly good). An Uncommon title, this copy notable as it is SIGNED by Maurice Samuel on the FFEP. In addition, it has been SIGNED, INSCRIBED and dated June 1943 by Abram Leon Sacher, noted historian and president of Brandeis University. Two of the great figures of XXth Century Jewish arts and letters are present on the same page. The red, white and blue dustjacket is unclipped, but has several large chips and the spine is browned.
