London: Picador, 2010. Paperback trade, very good condition, minor edgewear. 260 pp. In this very special book, Oliver Sacks tells the stories of people who are able to navigate the world and communicate with others despite losing what many of us consider indispensable senses and abilities. A testament to the complexity of vision and the brain and the power of creativity and adaptation. It shows a whole new perspective on the power of language and communication, as we try to imagine what it is to see with another person's eyes, or another person's mind.

Description:
London: Picador Classic, 2015. Reprint ed.. Paperback large trade, very good condition, minor edgewear, price sticker rear cover. 262 pp. A classic work of psychology by American neurologist Oliver Sacks, a million-copy bestseller, that provides a groundbreaking narrative insight into the human mind. If a man has lost a leg, he knows he has lost a leg. But if he has lost a self (himself) he cannot know it, because he is no longer there to know it. Sacks recounts the stories of patients struggling to adapt to bizarre neurological disorder. These people often no longer recognize everyday objects, or are stricken with violent tics or shout involuntary obscenities, and yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents. Picador Classic edition, with an introduction by Will Self.

Description:
London: Granta Books, 1997. 1st U.K. ed.. Paperback thick octavo, very good condition, pages faintly toned, minor edgewear. 416 pp. Edward W. Said brings together history, philosophy, structuralism and critical theory in a stimulating work of literary criticism. The author argues that during the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel was the major attempt in Western literary culture to give beginnings an authorizing, institutional and specialized role in art, experience and knowledge. He traces this idea through the late 19th and early 20th centuries - to Freud's discoveries and the novels of modernist authors - and examines the question of beginnings in critical discourse, and the work of the French structuralists. He combines philosophy and belles-lettres, and does not separate literature from history, philosophy and social discourse, thereby broadening the role of criticism from celebration and orthodoxy to re-experiencing and questioning.

Description:
Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, 2003. Paperback octavo, very good condition, minor edgewear. 171 pp. Amain Saikal provides a broad-ranging assessment of relations between the Muslim and Western worlds in the contemporary era and historically. More than a "clash of civilizations" and a "war on terror" is involved as a response to the Sept 11 2001 terrorist attacks. These relations have been marked by long periods of peaceful coexistence, but also by many instances of tension, hostility, and mutual recrimination. The Australian political scientist assesses the impact of the continuing Arab-Israeli conflict, the consequences of the Iranian revolution and of the wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan, and charts a course for future coexistence.
