Entirely uncut and unopened in the original publisher's boards (rubbed, later rebacked with cloth, restored, lettered in gilt); pp. [xii], 416, [4, publisher's list], [16 publisher's list on blue-ish paper stock, dated January 1801]; a little browned, otherwise a very good copy of an extremely rare work. First edition in English, apparently published first in French in Yverdon in 1783, and updated here for the British in the light of the Napoleonic threat. The tables referred to in the preface are on pages 385 to 388. Provenance: This particular copy with 20th-century navally-themed bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst (Lancashire pharmacist and keen collector of books relating to the Navy in original bindings), 1876 and 1922 Navy-related inscriptions to front endpapers, a few underlinings and annotations in pencil to text. COPAC locates two copies, at Exeter Institution, and Durham University only; the British Library only holds a microfiche.

This is the very rare first edition of the Royalist Salamberry's literary perambulations around Clermont-Ferrand, Blois, the Dordogne, Mont-Dore, Auvergne (source of the Dordogne) and other parts of provincial France.

Facsimile with good modern introductory text in English of the most magnificent colour-plate book of the 19th century on Java. The original is virtually unobtainable, and this reprint has become very rare as well.

Sometime bound in half tan calf with marbled boards, spine with gilt Greek key rules and brown morocco gilt lettering piece, all edges marbled; pp. xxxiv + 212, 34 plates, maps and text illustrations; very clean internally, very good. Second edition, first published the previous year. This popular and useful book went into nine editions by 1841.

No. 78 of 100, signed and numbered by the author. A lovely copy of this Sotheran publication, by the author of Angling Travels in Norway. The illustrations are by the author.

Original cloth with dust-wrapper; pp. xiii, 305, frontispiece portrait of the Queen Mother after a coloutrphotograph, numerous folding maps; wrapper with repaired tear and marginal rubbing, one corner bumped; apart from light spotting to text, a very good copy. First edition of this scarce regimental history, relating the regiment's actions in Burma, including the fiercest battle in Burma, on the Tiddim Road, the defence of Imphal, and the move to Rangoon. The Burmese episode takes up the first 92 pages of the volume. Other deployments, this time of the 2nd Batallion, included action in Sudan, Abyssinia and Eritrea, the Western Desert, until both the 1st and 2nd Batallion are united in Burma, Indonesia and Malaysia after the end of the Second World War.

First published in 1816, this is an account of a Christian missionary's life, activity and philosophical debates in Northern India and most importantly, Persia. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco lettering-piece to spine; pp. xxvii, [2, errata], 332, 58 (Appendixes); one large folding map, 14 engraved plates; initially, the map and a few plates carefully cleaned, minimal spotting in places, a very good, entirely uncut and complete copy. First English edition. Sauer was secretary to the Billings' expedition, in which Sarychev also participated (his separate account was published in Russian in the same year). Billings sailed to the Behring Strait, touching land both on the Chukchi peninsular and in Alaska. Most importantly, the expedition explored the Aleutian islands. The present account, which complements Sarychev's, was compiled by Sauer from official reports. Chavanne 3988; Lada-Mocarski 58; Ricks' Alaska Bibliography p. 192.

Contemporary full mottled calf, blind fillets to sides, spine with raised bands, tooled in blind, red morocco gilt lettering piece to second compartment; pp. [vi] + 256 + 8, frontispiece portrait of author, 61 plates; binding a little rubbed with some loss to foot of spine and to corners, occasional light foxing, previous owner's signature to ffep, very good. First edition. A richly illustrated work of equine anatomy and hippiatrics, written by the inspector of the King of France's High Stable and edited by his son, the riding-master at the Academy of the University of Leiden. It is unusual to see a copy in such an untouched contemporary binding. The plates by Francois Morellon La Cave, among others, show great attention to detail as well as a flair for dramatic composition.

'Schaumann was born in Hanover and at the age of 16 he was compelled to join the army against his will, but he eventually rose through the ranks to the rank of junior-subaltern, though he left the Hanoverian Army in 1799. When France invaded Hanover in 1803 Schaumann went to England where he was employed as a clerk at a Newcastle firm. In 1807 he decided to move to Russia. Very rare reprint of the even rarer and unobtainable first edition of 1907, an indispensable guide to the rich monetary history of the Knight's Templars, and a valuable source for the history of Malta.

First edition of this expedition and excavation report documenting the joint Polish-Egyptian 1973 campaign into the remote depressioans of Bir Sahara, in order to gain some understanding of the pre-history of Egypt. Bir Terfawi and Bir Sahara are among the oldest human-inhabited places in Africa.

Original cloth, lettered in black; pp. 178, [6, advertisements], [16, blank for notes], two folding maps on one sheet, map in two colours as rear paste-down; evenly a little browned due to paper stock, a few marginal holes to upper margins at the beginning. First edition of this very rare handbook for the trade between Germany and the ailing Ottoman Empire, welded together during the First World War. Descriptions of towns and their goods, German companies and their branches in Turkey and the Arabic peninsula, difficulties for the trade arising from the war and much more useful information is given in this volume. Provenance: Imperial War Museum. COPAC locates a single copy, in the BL.

Uncommon first edition of a book of spectacular views of the colony. Schomburgk identified and sent to England the Victoria Regia waterlily, and was awarded the Royal Geographic Society's gold medal for his scientific work. First edition. Cronwright Scheiner was a South African farmer and politician, and the husband of the renowned activist and novelist Olive Schreiner. This book became a standard work on the raising of Angora goats, as he deals with the history of the animal across the world.

Original illustrated wrappers; pp. vi, [7]-51, folding frontispiece plan, wood-engraved illustrations in the text; contained in the Quarterly Statement of the Palestine Exploration Fund, July, 1889; spine of wrappers a little chipped, otherwise fine. First edition of this archaeological examination of the ancient settlement in the north eastern corner of modern Jordan. Following his engineering studies in Stuttgart Schumacher worked as the chief engineer of the Province of Akko, in which position he was responsible for the design of many buidings and civil engineering projects, including the Damascus-Haifa railway. His outstanding achievement was the survey of Golan, Ajlun and the Hauran, supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund, founded in 1865, the oldest exploration society of the Levant, who hold him in such high esteem that their logo is a reproduction of the gilt-stamped vignette on the front cover of Schumacher's later Northern 'Ajlûn.

In the 1890s he returned repeatedly to Africa, and this letter informs Ernest Ayscoghe Floyer (1852-1903) about difficulties with topographical names of a map of Egypt, and indiginous plant names and species.
