Agnon's mock epic novel, is an elaborate frame story encompassing dozens of Hassidic tales. Set in early nineteenth-century Galicia, the plot is part quest, part comedy of errors, progressively departing from its opening tone of realism. The narrative is decisively double-edged: naïve, in the manner of classic folk tales, as well as sophisticated and artful, as a modern work. The Bridal Canopy parodies the Hassidic folk tale, but does so very delicately; it censures without acrimony, always maintaining an air of reverence for the Old World. Unlike other depictions of Eastern European Jewry's shtetl life, the story is sufficiently subtle to… Read More

A Collection of the folkore and legends of the Jews of Yemen, is southwestern Arabia, the oldest Jewish commnit in the world.
The Jewish community in Yemen, so we are told, is the oldest in existence. This may or may not be true, since we are fully in the dark about its origin, and the scattered records of its history before the late Middle Ages which we possess are tainted with legend. The Fallasha community in Ethiopia seems to be still older. However, the latter, due to its isolation from the rest of the… Read More

There are some valuable tips here, but the book is really more of an exercise book. In order to get the most out of it, it isn't really something to read as much as something to work your way into. There are a lot of good storytelling books out there, but this is really more of an exercise book. Good for that purpose; less good as a straight read-through. I didn't do all the exercises, but I did a number of them, and they worked out well. So, if you get this book, the best way to appreciate it is to take your time and work through it rather than read it like a regular business book.

With all the pomp and ceremony of medieval Italy as a colorful backdrop, Sabatini masterfully recreates the political intrigue and misguided loyalties that reigned as the 'Banner of the Bull' waved victoriously over the land. Weaving deft descriptions and spirited characterizations into historical events, this is the remarkable story of the notorious Cesare Borgia form the point of view of 'The Urbinian; The Peruguian; and The Venetian'.

FLEP displays library stamps and handwritten, very small, initials bottom near gutter. Small Library stamp top of text block. Reinforced gutter separation else content appears as unread and unblemished with near fine yellow/black boards displaying no significant surface edge wear. We've been told time and again that standardized tests aren't perfect but that they're the best tool we have to make important decisions. Is this really true? What are the flaws of such testing? Why is your fathers occupation a better predictor of SAT scores than virtually any other factor? Whose interests do these tests serve? And, most important, what can we do to hold one another accountable to standards at all levels of schools and in the workplace? Standardized Minds dramatically shows how our unhealthy and enduring obsession with intelligence testing affects us all, from the day we enter kindergarten to the day we apply for that corporate job. In scale, the tragedy of Leningrad dwarfs even the Warsaw ghetto or Hiroshima. Nearly three million people endured it; just under half of them died, starving or freezing to death, most in the six months from October 1941 to April 1942 when the temperature often stayed at 30 degrees below zero. For twenty-five years the distinguished journalist and historian Harrison Salisbury has assembled material for this story. He has interviewed survivors, sifted through the Russian archives, and drawn on his vast experience as a correspondent in the Soviet Union. What he has discovered and imparted in The 900 Days is an epic narrative… Read More
