Spine and front wrapper gently sunned, nick and short closed tear to head of spine. Contemporary festive inscription in blue pen to title page: "To Jean Xmas 1945/ from Jim and Aileen", printing glitch to p.34, else clean, tight and tidy. Unusual in both the trade and British research libraries: Jisc LHD lists six holdings (BL, LSE, NLS, Senate House Library, UoLiverpool & UoReading). Near fine. "Many of the contributions were first printed in the Land Girl, the magazine of the Women's Land Army", and a few from 'Meet the Members', published by the Women's Timber Corps. Others contributions were submitted for review anonymously. The collection was re-issued by the Imperial War Museum in 1997. London: Constable, 1947. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, WITH AUTHORIAL INSCRIPTION. 8vo (in 16s), pp. [xii], [502] + Piper's colour lithographic frontispiece, plus b/w plates and illustrations. Mauve cloth, spine and upper board lettered in gilt. Lean and sunning to spine, corners bumped. Sadleir's inscription in blue ink to ffep: "For Kenneth Hare/ With best regards/ Michael Sadleir/ Feb '47," a little foxed. Else, pleasingly clean and tidy, especially for a war economy publication. In John Piper's atmospheric dust jacket: toned and dust-dulled, edgewear, creasing and nicking. Very good/ very good. The bibliographer, collector and Constable director's second fictional foray into the Victorian underworld. The dedicatee is likely Kenneth Hare (1888-1962) minor British poet, author and frequent contributor to The English Review.
