Description:
London: Printed by T. Badger for Matthew Wallbanck, 1642. First edition. 8vo. [vi], 167, [1] pp., lacking A1 (blank). Modern speckled calf, red morocco spine label, by Bayntun; title-page browned and chipped, small shallow gouge to fore-margin of textblock, previous ownership inscription dated 1828 on title-page First book edition of Selden's report on the privileges of the Lords, first compiled in 1621 when Selden was employed as a legal historian by the House of Lords. "[Selden] used historical evidence to establish such 'speciall rights' as proxies, freedom from lawsuits during the sitting of parliament, and the power of judicature, and such 'private' privileges as trial by peers and giving evidence by a protestation upon honour instead of upon oath (fols. 2v, 98r). Although the treatise vested judicature in the Lords, Selden was imprisoned, ironically, on suspicion of vesting it in the Commons" (ODNB).REFERENCE: ESTC R10915; Wing S2434

[Livorno], Italy: Printed for C. and J. Ollier, 1819. First edition. 8vo. xiv, 104 pp. Full green crushed morocco, gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe; bound without first blank, fine save for occasional pencil marks to margins First edition, one of 250 copies. Based on real events, the tragic story of Beatrice, "La Cenci," a Roman noblewoman executed in 1599 for the murder of her tyrannical and abusive father. Shelley was inspired to write the play after seeing Guido's portrait from life of the imprisoned Beatrice; he claims in the Preface that he learned the details of the case from a manuscript copied from the archives of the Cenci Palace. With its theme of the corruption and cruelty of the aristocracy, Shelley intended the work to appeal to the masses, and consciously avoided poetic language: "I have avoided with great care in writing this play the introduction of what is commonly called mere poetry, and I imagine there will scarcely be found a detached simile or a single isolated description"…

London: John Murray, 1909. First edition. 8vo. viii, 109, [1], [2, ads] pp. Publisher's pictorial cloth; small tear to head of spine, some toning and spotting to covers, endpapers foxed, bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown First edition of Sir George Sitwell's classic celebration of the gardens of Tuscany, Rome and the Italian lake district more philosophical treatise than manual of plant care and practical garden design. Before the final overthrow of the Picturesque in the twentieth century, English Romantics looked once more to Italy, perceiving in its decayed villa gardens a certain kind of landscape poetry. Perhaps the most Romantic analysis of Italian villa gardens was by the early-twentieth-century English aesthete Sir George Sitwell (1860-1943), who devoted an entire chapter to its analysis in On the Making of Gardens (Rogers, et al, Romantic Gardens, p. 30)

.A remarkable and vivid self-portrait of the development of a deeply thoughtful, intelligent and talented young Jewish girl in wartime Liverpool and London. Written between the ages of 14 and 20 while Froma is living first at the family home in Liverpool (5 Sefton Park Rd) and attending Aigburth Vale High School for Girls, whose loathed headmistress is Miss E.M. Curry. Later, Froma is stationed in London while serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS). We see Froma grappling with her Jewish identity and sexuality (including strong attraction to several older women), experiencing frequent trouble with authority at school and home (her father appears to have…

New York: William T. Comstock, 1889. First edition. Oblong 4to. 59 plates after drawings by Stevens, numerous illustrations in text. 40 pp. Publisher's blue-green cloth, front cover and spine stamped in gilt; spine ends repaired, hinges reinforced and now sturdy, some repairs to endsheets, covers scuffed and extremities worn, moderate soiling and scuffing, final paragraph of Preface effaced Scarce first edition of this important treatise on the Shingle Style of architecture. Stevens (1855-1940), who supplied the plans and drawings illustrated here, was a major innovator of the Shingle Style. He was prolific, completing some 1,000 commissions, mostly along the Maine coast, including approximately 300 homes on the Portland peninsula. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Albert Winslow Cobb, who had previously worked at the Boston office of William Ralph Emerson, another major innovator of the Shingle Style. Cobb, who provides the text, argues for the Shingle Style as a necessary reform to produce a…

Contemporary half calf and marbled boards; worn, joints cracked, front hinge reinforced, rear cover holding by cords, occasional light foxing, horizontal tear across pp. xix-xx First edition of what is "regarded as [Stuart's] most important historical work ... The concept of property, as it developed from an object of communal to private interest, formed the framework from which Stuart considered such topics as the roles of the sexes, the place of religion, and the state of manners in medieval European society. In part Stuart wrote the View of Society in opposition to the introductory volume of William Robertson's popular History of Charles V. Where Robertson emphasized the gradual improvement of society, Stuart marked out the gradual corruption of feudal institutions, pessimistically attributing this decline to man's inability to alter his destiny" (Zachs, ODNB).PROVENANCE:…
