Description:
Paris: J. Langlume et Peltier, 1835. A little foxing of the text but a very good copy, rubbed. Octavo, with 20 handcoloured plates (including frontispiece), original patterned green papered boards. A charming French account of the peoples of the world written for younger readers and featuring twenty vibrant hand-coloured plates including a Tahitian scene and a depiction of a war canoe from New Zealand. The chapter on Polynesia comprises a rather good description of the manners and customs of Tahiti. The brightly coloured plate, titled Repas d'un chef d'Otaiti, depicts a chief draped in scarlet cloth with three attendants serving and preparing his meal. Some elements of the scene, such as the cocoanut palm and native dwelling at the rear, are reminiscent of the Pacific although the draped apparel of the figures is of oriental influence. The plate depicting the war canoe of New Zealand is based on a study by Sydney Parkinson, and although the cloaks and garments of the figures are fancifully coloured… Read More

Description:
London: John Cooke, 1799. Slight browning, a little frayed at bottom edge yet good.. Copper engraving, 233 x 295 mm. Lord Sandwich, for whom Cook named the Hawaiian islands; after the portrait by Gainsborough. Cook's friend and patron John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty in February 1748, and in three short years instigated a series of reforms of shipyards and naval discipline, but was bundled out of office in 1751. His notorious personal life, which included membership of the infamous Hellfire Club meant that he was often lampooned, satires which became vicious when he was involved in the prosecution of John Wilkes. He nonetheless returned to the Admiralty in 1771, where he quickly became the mentor and confidant of James Cook, a friendship begun in the heated debates about the outfitting of his second voyage. It was Sandwich who prevailed on Cook to undertake his third voyage when Cook had initially refused the post. This portrait, engraved… Read More

Description:
Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1652. A little rubbed at right-hand margin yet a lovely impression.. Handcoloured engraved map, 400 x 545 mm. (plate size); mounted. Stately double-hemisphere map by Nicolas Sanson, cartographer extraordinaire and geographer to Louis XIII. Sanson's principal historical importance lies in his role as a disseminator of knowledge: 'His maps, geographical tables and teaching captured the attention of persons no less eminent than Richelieu, Fouquet, the chancellor Seguier, and Cardinal Mazarin...The regard of such illustrés reveals Sanson as an important conduit of geographical knowledge to centres of power in France, which at this time was at its most important period of expansion in Canada, the West Indies, Africa, and the Near East' (Pedley, Imago Mundi 44). As a youth with a Jesuit education, Sanson displayed precocious intelligence and an unusual affinity for mapmaking. These valuable attributes attracted the attention of Cardinal Richelieu, then first minister of the king,… Read More

An illustrated two-page description of the platypus which, although based on field observations of one Mr. Bennet, still demonstrates the lack of understanding of this unique creature: "It is now a clearly-ascertained fact, that the young are suckled by their mother, and, consequently, it is not at all probable that they are hatched from eggs". .

Description:
Zurich: Brodtmann, 1824. Very good. Quarto, 405 x 315 mm visible, decoratively mounted and framed. An amazing and large early lithographic image depicting two tattooed men of the Marquesan Islands of the South Pacific. This is the work of Heinrich Rudolf Schinz (1777-1861), a Swiss physician and naturalist, taken from his rare publication "Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Säugethiere", a remarkable ethnographic survey of native inhabitants of the world that brought together descriptions and images of peoples of Kamtschatka, Japan, China, Timor, Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, North America and Africa. Schinz sourced his work from major voyage accounts including those of Cook, Langsdorff, Kotzebue, Krusenstern and Baudin. Sailors on these early voyages began to adopt tattooing on first seeing these incredibly decorated islanders; by so doing they introduced the art to the West. Schinz's images were first lithographed by Engelmann, the pioneer in the genre, and have been justly described as having a… Read More

Description:
Salzburg: Johann Joseph Mayr, 1713. Slightly dusted at beginning and end, some wear to lower margins at start and a few pages lightly waterstained.. Folio, with three engraved map plates; recent quarter dark calf and marbled boards. Rare: with little-known and unusual cartographic depictions of New Holland. This is an unusually lavish presentation of a thesis, presented at Salzburg University by the exotically titled Count Schlick. Two of his complex and interesting maps encompass the discoveries of the previous century both of Australia and the Pacific in general, while a third plate has three different projections of the world map. A copy of the book handled by us a few years ago had a frontispiece which is not present here. The maps are curious but finely executed, set within detailed and highly stylised plates. "Nova Hollandia", in particular, has a distinctive and rather unusual shape, which might be thought to borrow from the classic designs of the late-seventeenth century. They are unusual… Read More

Folio, title page printed in red and black; extra engraved title, engraved portrait, and 19 double-page engraved plates, with one full page engraving and many more engravings in the text; the second part with engraving on the title page and 13 engraved plates; a handsome copy in old limp vellum with ties, spine lettered in ink. A tremendous visual resource and one of the most famous descriptions of the Dutch (and Portuguese) settlements in the East Indies, with striking views of Malacca, Batavia, Macassar, Ternate, Aniboina, Point de Galle, Colombo, Negapatam and elsewhere. These richly inked detailed engravings were used to great advantage by the Golden Cockerel Press to illustrate their publication of a translation of Jean de Lacombe's voyages to the East Indies (A Compendium of the East, 1937). Description:
Sydney: Australian Museum, 1899. Five folio parts, 21 hand-coloured lithographed plates, all with the colophon "Allan & Wigley, Printers, Sydney", descriptive letterpress, original wrappers; preserved in a custom built folding cloth case. A beautiful Australian natural history production, scarce complete, by two pioneering Australian women artists. Harriet and Helena Scott were the foremost natural science painters in New South Wales from 1850 until 1900; Rose Docker of the Australian Museum cites them as "true artists and naturalists of note". Through prodigious talent, the two sisters became highly skilled artists, natural history illustrators and specimen collectors, all largely otherwise a male domain in 19th-century Australia. This set comprises the second edition but first Sydney printing of the nine-plate first part, of which only 100 copies had been prepared in London in 1864, (with the 1899 reprint of the title-page only), and the first printing of the remaining parts. --- With the guidance… Read More
