The story title and author’s name are typed at the beginning of the piece; very good condition.

Undated, but probably from the late twenties or thirties; a 28 page typed ms. of a short story, very heavily corrected in ink by the author, with the addition of hundreds of words in his hand. A romantic tale of 16th century France, collected in Turbulent Tales (1946). A Queen’s Quorum selection, describing these as historical detective tales. Saint-Exupery has drawn four male figures, one of which bears a strong resemblance to this preliminary sketches for The Little Prince, on the blank back cover of the Sunday, July 30, 1939 dinner menu of the celebrated French Line ship Normandie. Approximately 10 x 14”; aside from a narrow tape stain along the side edges of the front cover, in excellent condition. This particular crossing remains famous for its record time of 3 days, 23 hours, and 2 minutes. During the passage, the ship was buzzed by Saint-Exupery’s co-pilot and friend Guillaumet (with whom he had flown on a trans-Atlantic round-trip earlier in the month). The author traveled to New York at the request of his American publisher, Reynal & Hitchcock, to promote the American edition of Terres des Hommes (Wind, Sand and Stars), but imminent war in Europe cut his trip short, returning to France only a week before the declaration of war.

One of seventeen lettered copies (HC); with the author’s presentation inscription on the half-title, “Pour Monsieur Jean____, En hommage et sympathies Antoine de St Exupery.” The author’s second book; Connolly 100 (in English: Night Flight).

Boston: Little, Brown, 1951. First Edition. Faint tape marks on the cover cloth; bookplate on the rear endpaper; very good in a jacket with minor wear and chipping and a thumbnail-sized chip at the bottom of the back panel.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1963. First Edition; first state, without the dedication page. [With] copies in the second and third states; all three are fine or nearly fine in dust jackets. The earliest state was reportedly recalled and only twenty copies supposedly survived in the wild. This cataloguer has seen it often enough to suspect that the number is higher, although it is certainly uncommon.
