Description:
Pamphlet, removed, dbd, 27 pp. Removed, title page with a couple of small tears on the top, not affecting text, normal aging and foxing; else about very good. John Taliaferro (1768-1852) and John P. Hungerford (1761-1833) were competing for the same house seat in 1811. While it appears that Hungerford had more votes, Taliaferro's camp claimed that some of Hungerford's votes were not legitimate. A committee was set up to investigate, and this pamphlet gives Hungerford time to present his case. Taliaferro was elected to Congress four times between 1800and 1834, and Hungerford was also a Congressman, and served in both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. It appears that Taliaferro won the seat, but Hungerford would be back in Congress after the War. # 100965

Description:
8vo, 2 volumes, later ¾ morocco, illustrated with 8 tinted lithographic plates, 251, 247pp.Titles and frontispieces bleached, else significant foxing throughout. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Solid set overall. Eldorado is considered one of the best contemporary accounts of the California gold rush by a highly renowned traveler. Taylor had a great eye for detail, and shares some fascinating experiences in this work. His impressions of San Francisco, which basically presents a picture of a very busy unfinished frontier town, are especially interesting. On every side stood buildings, of all kinds, begun or half-finished, and the greater part of them mere canvas sheds. He was much impressed by the high prices for just about everything, but also reports that this gave opportunities for some. Musicians, for example, could earn $16 a night, and he knew of a Swiss organ girl who had earned $4,000 in six months. Taylor spends a lot of time discussing the gold rush, and…

Description:
8vo, original cloth binding, gilt title on spine, 192 pp. Very slight edgewear, and normal aging; otherwise very good plus. A scarce and uncommon title that was published by a small essentially black college. Considering when this was published, at a time the "civil rights movement' was coming into its own, this has to be viewed as a groundbreaking title. Martin D. Jenkins reminds us in the foreword that while African Americans have made important contributions to the natural sciences the awareness of the public and even other scientists is rather low. In the first chapter Herman R. Branson gives an overview and the challenges facing the Negro scientist, in the chapters that follow influential black scientists illustrate their contributions to biology, Chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Branson worked with Linus Pauling on protein stricture, Montague Cobb, another contributor, was the first African American to get a PH. D. in Anthropology. Physicist Warren Henry, well known for his outstanding work…

Description:
Pamphlet, removed, and disbound, 8vo, 6 pp. A few small chips on left margin; normal aging. Ink notation on last page. This petition is an appeal by Americans living in the Oregon territory for protection by the United States Government. The folks in Oregon were feeling neglected and wondered why they were less entitled to protection because they lived west of the Rocky Mountains. They cite the challenges of having to live among large Indian tribes and dealing with a might foreign power (Great Britain). They also claim that they moved to Oregon, not just to improve their lot in life, but to extend the area of freedom promoted by the United States. The document strongly suggests that previous requests for aid have been ignored. This seems to have particular significance with respect to their relationship with the Indians. According to the petitioners, part of the problem with the Indians, whose predatory habits and thievish propensities were becoming a much larger…

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, disbound, 51 pp. Disbound, modern somewhat crude tape repairs to spine, ink stain in lower right corner throughout, a few chips at extremities, some minor foxing; still a decent copy. James Henley Thornwell (1812-1862) was a Presbyterian minister and educator born in the Marlboro District of South Carolina. He was educated at the Andover Theological Seminary and the Harvard Divinity School, and in 1835 he became the pastor at a new Presbyterian church in Lancasterville, South Carolina. The basic premise of this work is a justification for slavery. Thornwell uses scripture and religious to justify slavery, and to even address some of the arguments of abolitionists. He also appears to suggest that we are doing slaves a favor, and will earn their gratitude if we bring them to god, "They will feel that those are not tyrants who are striving to bring them to God." ANB. Sabin 95649. Work p 215.

Included in the August 1868 issue of Harper's Monthly, Thorpe's article begins on page 401, and covers the custom of dueling in an 11-page article.
