Description:
London: Geoffrey Bles, 1934 A good copy of the 1st edition, lacking the wrapper but internally in very good clean condition. A fascinating attempt to assemble and publish a scientific study into the then early reports of a monster in Loch Ness. Illustrated with sketches, by witnesses and by Gould from witness accounts, and with photographs taken at the time. The yellow cloth binding has red titles to spine and front board. There is fading and some mottling to board edges, the bottom part of the spine and the lower half of the back board, which also has a small dark mark. The top corner of the back board is bumped and the other corners have a degree of turning. The top spine end is lightly pulled and the bottom spine end has a small cloth tear. Internally the pastedown endpapers are illustrated with a map of Loch Ness. Contents are complete and very clean with the occasional small mark and some slight foxing on p 198.

Description:
London: Chapman and Hall Ltd, 1913 A very good copy with numerous black and white illustrations by Charles Robinson. Rebound by Colin Kerr, an Orkney craftsman specialising in furniture-making, wood sculpture and book binding. He undertook a number of commissions for the local Council to rebind books in commemorative bindings as gifts and, as an avid book collector, rebound some of his own books too. This binding has raised bands, gilt decoration and decorative title label to the spine. There is a gilt design to the front board, and some gilt tooling to board edges. New paisley-style endpapers have been added. A new page marker has been added. Contents, with numerous illustrations of birds, are very clean, with just the occasional light mark or spot. There is a dedication 'To Clive from Mother, 1913' on a preliminary page.

Description:
London : James Cundee, 1806 A good copy of this scarce 6 volume work bound in 3 volumes. With 58 (of 60) hand coloured plates and 6 hand coloured vignette title pages. An account of natural history based around observation and reading mixed with anecdotes and tales relating to the animal in question. The illustrator (anonymous) has then produced some extraordinary illustrations including an orang utan at the dining table, a flock of herons attacking rooks, a boxing kangaroo, and a man riding an ostrich, and a sneaking crocodile. Rev Smith refers to himself as an 'editor' rather than an author - but there are no clues as to contributors. Originally planned in 4 volumes, Vol 5 and 6 (covering fish, amphibians, insects and other invertebrates) were added in 1807. Each volume has a frontispiece, a hand coloured vignette title page, and a plain title page. According to the directions to the binder at the end of Vol 6, there should be 60 plates - this copy is lacking a frontispiece of a turkey and… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: William Brown, 1885 A very good copy of the limited edition, reprinted in 1885 from the original edition of 1760 by William Brown. 110 copies were produced of which 100 were for sale, and this is numbered 83 with William Brown's initials. This edition has a preface which gives the historical context to the letter. It was apparently written at the request of an anonymous individual (who edited and published the letter in 1760) to ascertain the background to a lawsuit brought against the Earl of Morton by his vassals. Rev Hepburn was the Minister of Birsay and therefore considered well placed to give a picture of local life and the causes of poverty in the area. This copy is in a probably original cloth binding with paper label to spine. The binding is sound and clean with wear to the top and bottom of the spine, corners and edges. Contents with title page to limited edition; note 5pp; title page 1760; advertisement by the Editor; letter; appendix; finis. Contents in very good to near fine… Read More

The endpapers are contemporary with the binding and have the decorative bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson to the front pastedown. There is an initial blank and several end blank leaves. Oxford: Printed at the Shakespeare Head Press Saint Aldgates and published for the Press by Basil Blackwell, 1933 A good to very good copy of the 2 volume limited edition of Malory's epic work, taken from the only remaining copy of the Wynkyn de Worde printing housed by the John Rylands Library in Manchester. In their original half morocco bindings with gilt titles to spine. Copy no 139 of 350 (370 originally published with 20 not for public sale). Both bindings are clean with very light marking to the cloth. In Vol I there is light rubbing to spine ends and corners, most pronounced at the top front corner. Vol II has some fraying at the top of the spine and a little leather loss at the joint with the top of the front board. There is more pronounced rubbing at the top corners. Both have rubbing to front edges. Top page edges gilt, remainder untrimmed. Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for the Author by P. Neill, 1823 A very scarce original copy of the Reverend Walter Traill of Westope's furious response to Alexander Peterkin's Notes on Orkney and Zetland, published a year previously. Traill refutes a number of Peterkin's statements, accusing him of not knowing enough about his subject matter, and in the process provides a lot of useful information about farming and fishing practices. This copy is in a half leather binding with gilt title to spine and cobbled cloth boards with gilt title to front board. There is some scuffing to spine joints and the top and bottom of the spine, and some corner wear, but the binding is tight and sound. Contents: half title; title; advert; contents list; text pp 1-63; appendix pp 65-72. There are a couple of small splits at the front endpaper joint and small paper repairs to the gutter of the half title and advert pages. A nice clean copy.

Description:
Paris: Marc Orry, 1600 A good copy of the 2nd French edition of Joseph Acosta's important work on the New World first published in Spanish in 1590. Acosta was a Jesuit, who spent 17 years in South America and Mexico. His work, based on careful observation, formed one of the first accounts of the New World. This copy is in probably contemporary full vellum binding with yapp edges. The original ties have gone. It is difficult to say if the binding was hard or soft cover, because at some point in its history, it has had an old stiff embossed wallpaper with gilt birds and flowers, used to form new endpapers. There are no pages before the title page, which has had a strip added at the bottom and which is coming loose. Contents: title page; dedication pp ii-iv; advert; poems 4pp; Extrait du Privilege du Roi 1p; Text in 7 books pp 1-375; table of contents 34 pp. The text pages are numbered on the recto only. With decorative head pieces and initial capitals. The text is very clean with just the occasional… Read More

London: Printed by Joseph Streater, for sale by T Basset, J Robinson, B Aylmer, Joh Southby And W Canning, 1688 A very good copy of this important work on comparative anatomy with engraved title; rubricated title and 30 plates. The original publication had 2 separate parts, both complete in themselves - the second section 'The Measure of the Earth' translated by Richard Waller, is not present. Alexander Pitfeild undertook to translate this work, originally led by Charles Perrault for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Animals, mostly from the royal menageries at Vincennes and Versailles, were supplied to the Royal Academy, for detailed study and dissection. The first publication including 13 species, appeared in 1671 with a second volume 5 years later. The publications had very short print runs and were very expensive being elephant folio with detailed art work mainly by Sebastien Leclerc. LONDON : John Van Voorst, 1856 A VG copy of the first edition in the original blind stamped decorative cloth binding with gilt titles to spine. With colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one plain plate as called for. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear. The binding and the original endpapers are in very good clean condition with only a very slight marking to the top of the boards. The contents are also very clean and bright. The reverse of the plates have shadows of the plate images but there is little offsetting to the text. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.
