Description:
Little More, Tokyo, 1999. paperback. fine. British fashion photographer Terry Richardson produces strikingly beautiful images that sit on the fine line between art and commercialism, and is known for his work in W, The Face, ID and Vogue Hommes International. Son of Bob however explores some edgier and raunchier territory. It is a gleeful show of sex, travelogue scenes of an American underbelly, amorous masked and caped crusaders, professional wrestling fans, Harmony Korine, excreta, genitalia, food, and assorted candid portraits. These are party nights and hangover mornings, an extreme display of confrontational horseplay and rude humor. Citing "America's Funniest Home Videos, the amateur shots in Hustler, and archival photos from family albums and portraits from school or Woolworth's" as influences, Richardson combines these opposing sensibilities into a provocative documentary approach that will indeed push some buttons, in addition to finding a ravenous audience.

Description:
Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, 2001. paperback. fine. Published on the occasion of the 2001 exhibition Thomas Demand, curated by Dean Sobel, at the Aspen Art Museum (also traveled to De Apel Foundation, Amsterdam, ArtPace, San Antonio, Texas and SITE Sante Fe, Sante Fe, New Mexico). From the publisher: "German photographer Thomas Demand (b. 1964) is one of the most highly acclaimed artists of his generation. Like many of his contemporaries, his work investigates the nature and process of photography while exploring the role of the media in our culture. Demand begins his process with images of highly charged locations, usually interiors. He obtains these images from a variety of sources, including newspapers, the Internet, and even his own memory. Demand then builds life-size paper and cardboard models of these places, which in turn become the "subjects" of his large-scale photographs. While the artificiality of these images may not be immediately apparent, upon detailed examination, one can… Read More

Description:
Dia Foundation, New York, 2001. hardcover with dust jacket. fine. Thomas Schütte is a catalog of works by this contemporary German artist. Schütte studied under Gerhard Richter, Benjamin Buchloh, and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1970s. He comes from that strong conceptual background, but as his career matured the emotional content of his work evolved and became much more potent. Schütte's work is incredibly eclectic: ceramic figures, architectural models, drawings, outdoor sculptures, photographs, and installations. A recent work, Big Spirits (1996), is a collection of larger-than-life-size aluminum figures that seem to be morphing before one's eyes. They are at once ghost, human, and machine. Also riveting is The Innocents (1994), a series of photographs of the heads of handmade figurines, and United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes (1993)--offset lithographs, also of figurines wrapped in Schütte's clothes. His watercolors are beautiful,… Read More

Description:
"In September 1973, Fina Torres, a photojournalist active in Venezuela at that time, was in Santiago during the coup that overthrew the government of the Unidad Popular. She photographed the damage done by the artillery to the facade of the Palacio de la Moneda, the armed soldiers in the streets, and other unsettling scenes of everyday life at the time: the cleaning of painted slogans from the walls, people lining up to buy food, the surveillance of the embassies, and the anguished seriousness of people waiting outside the morgue. Photographs of similar scenes can be found in the photobook Chili September 1973 by Koen Wessing, one of whose images is virtually identical to another taken by Torres. Both photographed a dark-haired girl standing at the door of the nourgue and showing the ID photo of a soldier. Torres decided to repeat the image to show more clearly the features of the young man who had disappeared, and Wessing did the same. Ten days after the coup, the poet Pablo Neruda died in a clinic… Read More
