Description:
8 pp.Very rare first and only edition in the original Italian, of a pamphlet detailing the visit of the Siamese embassy to Rome, under de guidance of the Jesuit Guy Tachard, where they would meet with Pope Innocent XI.The French Jesuit missionary Guy Tachard (1651-1712) was sent on two occasions to the Kingdom of Siam by Louis XIV, as part of an embassy to achieve a commercial agreement with King Narai of Siam. Its capital, Ayut'is, became a French Macao for merchants and missionaries from and to the further east. On his return from Siam in 1688, Tachard went to Rome in his capacity as ambassador of the King of Siam, carrying gifts and a letter from King Narai to Innocent XI. He was accompanied by Siamese mandarins and two catechists from Tongking. The mission from Siam was officially received by Pope Innocent on 23 December 1688 at a splendid public ceremony. They were unaware that Narai had meanwhile died and that during his final illness an anti-French mandarin had seized power, killed most of his…

Description:
[40], 270, [1]; 286, [2] pp.Ad 1: second edition of Tachenius's popular work on Hippocratic chemistry. Hippocrates, in the Islamic tradition known as Boqrat, where he is often referred to as "the first codifier of medicine", is often named together with Galen, and their works mainly survived because of the Arabic translations.Ad 2: first edition of Tachenius's work on acid and alkalies which can be seen as an addition to the work above. Heavily influenced by Hippocrates (Boqrat), he claims that acid and alkalies are the two elements of all things, corresponding to the fire and water that according to Hippocrates are in all things. Binding damaged with some wormholes. Foxing throughout and wormholes in the endpapers. Overall a good copy.l Ad 1: Krivatsky 11653; cf. A.G. Debus, Chemistry and medical debate: Van Helmont to Boerhaave (2001), p. 114 et passim; ad 2: Krivatsky 11646.

Description:
[1], [1 blank], [6], 212 pp.First edition of a rare, complete, and richly illustrated guide to chiromancy, better known as palmistry or palm reading. It describes and explains the practice of fortune-telling through the study of the palm of one's hand. The present work is often attributed to Jean Taisnier (or Johannes Taisnerius, 1508-1562), but the name of the author is not mentioned anywhere on the title-page or in the text. The text starts with the definition of the practice of chiromancy, a compilation of information by other authors, and an explanation of the basic principles of palm reading. The majority of the work is dedicated to an extensive explanation of the location, name, meaning, and importance of every line to be found on hands. The whole is illustrated with 90 engraved plates of hands and the different lines different hands can have, showing a total of nearly 1300 hands with varying sets of lines. The purported author of the present work, Taisnier, was a 16th-century musician,…

Description:
[7], [1 blank], 178, [4] ll.First edition of the first significant account of the 1625 campaign by the combined Portuguese and Spanish forces to recapture the Brazilian city of Salvador de Bahia, which the Dutch had taken from the Spain in 1624. Several accounts of the retaking of Bahia were published, this one, by the royal chronicler, was the official one, so that the author had unrestricted access to military and eye-witness accounts."The fall and recapture of Salvador can be briefly summarized. The Dutch West India Company, formed in June 1621, sought a profitable and convenient way to wage war against Spain. Salvador, because of its location and sugar industry, offered a suitable target, and the Dutch hoped that the Portuguese dislike of Spanish rule might even cause the defenders to welcome to Dutch arrival. A powerful fleet was organized in 1623, but Spanish agents learned of its objective, and warnings were sent to the governor at Salvador. His efforts to prepare a defense were frustrated by…

Description:
Attractive watercolour painting by the Italian orientalist painter Enrico Tarenghi (1848-1938), it shows three bearded men with carpets and two poufs. One of them is clearly the seller, another is inspecting the wares and the third is sitting on the ground rolling up one of the carpets. In the background a wide river (generally assumed to be the Nile), a dromedary and dozens of palm trees.Tarenghi made extensive use of photography in his work and often used photographs as a template for the background. The present setting is found more often in his work, not only showing carpet sellers, but also merchants selling fruit. The carpet trade, however, seems to be one of his favourite subjects regardless of the background. The carpets allowed Tarenghi to show off his skills, with their intricate motives, textures, creases and folds.Small water stain and minor defects at the foot and a few other negligible blemishes, but otherwise in very good condition.l For the artist: Thieme & Becker XXXII, p. 445.

Description:
58, [1], [1 blank] ll.One of the earliest editions of a tragic play in Italian verse by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), published only a year after the first edition of 1587. Torrismondo follows the classical tradition, influenced by Sophocles and Seneca, and tells the story of Alvida, princess of Norway, who is forced to marry Torrismondo, King of the Goths. Tasso had made his name with his epic poem Gerusalemme liberata, published in 1580, and the present work also proved extremely popular.Although the endleaf facing the title-page is signed "Francisco: Drake" and the title-page initialled "FD", both in a contemporary hand, the signature does not closely resemble the known signatures of Sir Francis Drake (ca. 1540-1596), so the owner may have been a namesake. With an occasional running head shaved and the outer fold of the last quire reinforced and an occasional leaf slightly dirty. Otherwise in very good condition. An early edition of a play very popular in its day.l ICCU CNCE 48032 (8 copies);…

It is a digest of the accounts of all the Jesuit travellers to Ethiopia and Arabia, including Paez, De Montserrat, Almeida, Lobo and Mendes. It includes an account of the travels of the Jesuit missionaries Pédro Paez and Antonio de Montserrate. They were captured off the Kuria Muria islands on a mission from Goa to Ethiopia in 1590 and subsequently taken to Yemen, where they were held captive until 1596. After being sent to San'a by way of Melkis and the Wadi Hadramaut, then after three years taken to Al Mukha (Mocha), where they were forced to serve as galley slaves, they were finally ransomed in 1596 and returned to India. Description:
[4], 54 pp.Very rare first (and only early) edition of a report written by colonel James Francis Tennant (1829-1915), who oversaw the whole project to observe and record the transit of Venus across the sun from Roorkee in India, near the foothills of the Himalayas, and Lahore, slightly further west (it was not visible from western Europe). This was the first transit of Venus since 1769, so that greatly improved instruments and the introduction of photography promised great opportunities for new discoveries. The transits come in pairs, but after the associated transit in 1882 there were to be no more until 2004, so it was essential to be thoroughly prepared and to set up in locations where good weather could be expected. The report contains every relevant detail pertaining to the observation; from the preparations and necessary calculations to set up the equipment to the all-important results. In the preface, written in 1877 at the Royal mint in Calcutta, Tennant apologises for the delay in the…

[16], 83, [1 blank]; 83, [1 blank]; 128 pp. plus plates.Beautifully and extensively illustrated early work on the art and science of fortification, first published in 1624 and here in the 1630 issue of the 1624 edition. As the title indicates, it discusses the fortification, defence and conquest of fortresses used in various wars.Francesco Tensini (1581-1632 or later) had been a military engineer and officer in the service of the Duke of Bavaria, of the Spanish under Spinola against the Dutch before the Twelve Years' Truce of 1609, and of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. When he wrote the present work in 1624 he was in the government of the city of Venice. Jähns suggests Tensini's theories on fortification resemble those of his countryman Alessandro di Grotti, who had worked with him in the Bavarian army, suggesting they may have developed some of their innovative ideas together. But Van den Heuvel points out influences from Dutch fortification. The Dutch introduced many new ideas in fortification…

[2], 7, [1] pp.Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey, with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I (1640-1705), Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War, also known as the War of the Holy League (1683-1699). This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century, especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman IIIs directions presented in the book, for example, ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the…

[22], 196, [20] pp. plus 3 plates.Second edition, extensively revised and in the original Latin, of the official pharmacopoeia of the municipality of The Hague in the Netherlands. The index lists about 500 medicines. In some cases the text simply gives the name of the medicine with a reference to a published source, in others it gives a full recipe with the ingredients and instructions for their preparation. The 2-page engraved table, printed on two leaves that fold out so that one can consult them while reading the book, shows 90 symbols and gives their meanings, in alphabetical order. The magistrates and Collegium Medicorum of The Hague initiated the first edition, compiled by a committee of doctors from the Collegium, but even before it was published there were already complaints about its many and serious errors. They concluded that it was too late to correct them, but urged their colleagues to correct them in their own copies and they would be set right in a future edition, but in the event they…

[14], 108, [12] pp.First edition of the first pharmacopoeia of The Hague, in 4to, composed by the Collegiumm Medicorum of that city. [8], 322, [2]; 228; 179, [9]; 107, [5] pp.Rare second, much enlarged and best edition of the first scholarly German-language history of the well-known Hussite Wars up to the entry of Sigismund in 1436, including the life of Johannes Huss (1373-1415), and the expansion of Huss's ideas and teachings in Bohemia and beyond. It gives a comprehensive history of the Hussite wars, written in the early 16th century from a Protestant point of view (as opposed to the work of Cochlaeus), by Zacharias Theobald (1584-1627), minister at Krathofen. He composed it with the general public in mind and it was indeed very popular in Germany at a time when common interests brought close relations between Bohemian and German Protestants.Together with the first German edition of the Czech Confessio, together with the exposition of the Church Order and the organization of the Prague Consistory, added to the present edition as part 4: Confessio Bohemica Evangelica: Das ist Böhmische Confession ...The parts new to this second…

Description:
[4], VII, [1 blank], 215, [1 blank] pp.Sixth edition of a dispensatory originally written for use at the British military hospital in Flanders during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). It was compiled by John Pringle (1707-1782), physician-general of the military hospital, with the help of the Scottish physician John Clerk. By order of the Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), head of the army, the recipes in the dispensatory were fixed as standard for the army hospitals. Apparently on Cumberland's authority, the dispensatory was translated and annotated by John Theobald and published as the Medulla medicinae universae in 1747. In the introduction, Theobald particularly mentions the description of and cure for gonorrhoea (an illness "but superficially understood") as "very minutely and circumstantially handled". This due to the fact that the army hospital had a "long successful Practice in regard of that unlucky Disorder" (pp. vi-vii).This sixth edition contains not only the original recipes…

Description:
[8], 54, [2], 70, [2] pp.First bilingual edition of the oldest treatise on spherical geometry, providing the first edition of the original Greek and the first Latin edition to be translated directly from the Greek. It was composed by the Greek mathematician and astronomer Theodosius, perhaps around the year 100 BCE, and edited by Jean Péna (1528?-1558?), mathematician at the Collège Royale. The Greek text and very extensive notes, also in Greek, occupy the first half of the book, while the Latin translation of both text and notes (and repeating the woodcut diagrams) occupies the second half. The first two Latin editions (Venice 1518 and Vienna 1529) were translated from Arabic translations of the Greek, so the present book was a watershed in the development of Greek scholarship. Since spherical geometry was essential to the development of astronomy, it also set the stage for the Renaissance revolution set in motion by Copernicus, Gallileo and others. On top of that it was a monument to the golden…

Description:
[13], [1 blank], 242 pp.First edition, second impression, of an account of the Arabs living in the marshes of southern Iraq, written by Wilfred Thesiger (1910-2003), who stayed with them from 1951 to 1958. "From my recollections, helped by my diaries, I have tried to give a picture of the marshes and of the people who live there. Recent political upheavals in Iraq have closed this area to visitors. Soon the marshes will probably be drained; when this happens, a way of life that has lasted for thousands of years will disappear" (introduction). In 25 chapters Thesiger describes his experience in the marshes. They are illustrated with over a 100 photographs showing the people, their homes, boats, horses and kettle, and some common activities like fishing, preparing food and making homes and buildings out of water reed. Thesiger also wrote Arabian sands, published in 1959. In very good condition. Dustjacket only slightly worn at head and foot of the spine.l For the author see: A. Maitland, Wilfred…
