New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1847. This is Volume Two only of Taylor's well-known history, which was first published in 1833. Brown pebbled cloth binding with copper titling on the spine (along with "The Family Library" and "No. 52"). Clean text, very clear and unfoxed; 372 pages, including Appendix. This is an ex-library copy, but the treatments are mostly salutary; aside from a label on the spine and evidence of perhaps a removed pocket on the rear paste-down, the front paste-down has an attractive label dated 1883 detailing the Rules. William Cooke Taylor (1800-1849) was an Irish journalist and historian who worked to repeal the Corn Laws (ironically, it took the Great Famine to accomplish this). These are Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copies of the First Edition, which precedes the American by two years. Uncommon to scarce. Two volumes. Marbled paper-covered boards with calf spine and tips. Fancy gilt decorations and titling ["Constable's Miscellany" "73 "and "74" "Civil Wars in Ireland"] on the spine. Clean texts; xiii, 316 pages and vi, 330 pages (pagination begins with 7). All page ends are marbled. Volume One has an engraving on the half-title of Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, while Volume Two has Trim Castle, Co. Meath. These are Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copies of the First American Edition.The English edition was published two years previously, and did not contain Sampson's "Additions." Uncommon to scarce. Dark brown cloth bindings with gilt titling on the spine. Part of the publisher's "Family Library," numbers 51and 52. Clean texts; 285 pages and 372 pages, with a four-page catalog in the rear of Volume Two. Contemporary owner label on the front paste-downs. Light bumps; with some scattered spotting throughout, but the text remains bright and clear. The gilt titling on the spine is exceptionally bright, and these are definitely exceptional copies, the best Quercus has seen.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. London, Edinburgh, and New York: Thomas Nelson and Sons, 1890. Crona Temple (pseudonym of Clara Lavinia Cornfield, 1846-1916) was a prolific author of children's books. This is a Very Good copy of one of her few books that were not published by a religious house (this the only one seen by Quercus]. An uncommon to scarce title. Blue decorative cloth binding with titling in black and gilt; the titling on the spine is gilt, with a figure in black. Clean text; 115 pages, with an eight-page catalog in the rear. Frontis illustration, with six others within. Mild bumps and light rubbing and soil; the spine has darkened but the gilt remains bright. The rear cover has a bit of bubbling. Sir William (1628-1699), a noted essayist of his time, employed Jonathan Swift as his secretary; Temple's Miscellanea was first issued in 1690; Swift republished the collection two years after the Baronet's death. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy, printed in London by Benjamin Tooke. Full leather binding of smoothe calf, decoratively stamped on the covers; four raised bands on the spine, deoratively stamped in gilt; red compartment with titling in gilt. Clean text; 368 pages; page ends sprinkled in red. The textblock is pristine, as bright as it was in 1701. There is an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down: ["The Right Hon. the Earl of Berkshire Lord Marshall of England. anno 1720." There is no publication date, but a previous-owner signature dated 1894 seems about right; others in the series have been dated here. Original publisher's green cloth binding, decoratively ruled and stamped; titling on the spine in gilt. Clean text; 178 pages. The publisher has placed an eight-page catalog [dated "September, 1864"[ in the front of the book; a rather unusual practice in the book trade. Front paste-down has the bookplate of John Francis Neylan (1885-1960). A prominent lawyer, newspaper publisher, and politician, Neylan served on the Board of the University of California during the contentious years of the Loyalty Oath. Marbled paper-covered boards, with brown leather tips and spine; five raised bands; titling in gilt on black labels; page-ends are marbled. Clean text; 382 pages and 376 pages. Points for the First Issue. Numerous illustrations by Thackeray. Both volumes have a frontis iiilustration and an illustrated half-title page. Armorial bookplate of William Scott Dalgairn Moncrief (1858-1913), who served in the Zulu and Boer Wars. There is some minor spotting scattered within. Both covers have split at the spine; while holding, the book is fragile. Please note the condition issue; Quercus must offer this as a Binding Copy, in need of restoration or repair.. First Edition. New York: The F.M. Lupton Publishing Company, 1865. This is a Very Good copy of an unknown edition of some of Thackeray's most well-known periodical works. Although the copyright date is 1845, this cannot be correct, as "Notes on a Journey" came out a year after that. A rare omnibus edition, not appearing in standard bibliographies or WorldCat. Quercus speculates that it may be a pirate edition, issued after the author's death in 1863. Dark green ribbed cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 451 pages. "She is perhaps most famous for starring as Becky Sharp in the original 1899 production of Langdon Mitchell's Becky Sharp, a play based on William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair" (Wikipedia).
