Sharp, the US Ambassador to France. 2 pages on official American Red Cross letterhead, 7 x 5.5 in. After Taft left the Presidency, he became Chairman of the American Red Cross and modernized the organzation alongside Mabel Boardman. He writes that Boardman "really founded the Red Cross, and brought it to its efficient organization for peace purposes," a sly reference the foundation's mismanagement under Clara Barton's leadership. This letter comes almost one year after the US entered the war in May 1917, and details some of the careful ways in which the organization sought to grow its international relief efforts. It's one of the earliest American novels with a homosexual theme, exploring the deep friendship between two men, Joseph Atherley and Roger Bascombe, in rural Pennsylvania during the mid-19th century. The book is significant for its portrayal of same-sex relationships within the constraints of its historical context. It presented a special attachment between two men and discussed the nature and significance of such a relationship, romantic but not sexual. Cover is vibrant red with an illustration of surgeons in a corner. Plot is loosely autobiographical and follows the formative years of Hank Leher. Born of Jewish parents in an Indiana mill town, his father and mother, are concerted in their efforts to let him become a doctor. Plot follows the many characters and experiences he has along the way to becoming a doctor. Autograph letter signed from Hannah L. Gowdy, a 19th century teacher who was part of the first wave of women entering the profession. 4.5" x 7.5". Gowdy, at this point old and impoverished, writes to an autograph collector, Frank Bohrer, about a business dealing:... having no cards, [I] send you a few lines, products of my leisure moments, which are short, for being a a pauper through deaths and frauds, I am homeless except what annuity I get from the Teachers Retirement Fund -- only 12 dollars per month. I pay a part of my board by feeble labor. Should your friends see fit to compound a book and fin anything of mine suitable, please use the same and upon receiving two copies will send you ten dollars next Aug." [Magic Lantern, Iran] Collection of 3 Vintage Optical Lantern images of Iran circa 1905. 3 1/4" X 4." The images include the Qajar king palace, royal gardens in Tehran, and the Khaju Bridge in Isfahan. In the first image we see a Persian man in traditional 19th century clothing strolling in the Qajar royal Palace and gardens. The second image is a very rare aerial view of 19th century Tehran, labeled "the Shah's gardens and the new neighborhoods." Since this image predates airplanes it is an extremely rare find, probably using an aerial balloon. In the final image we see the Khaju Bridge, which is one of the most famous bridges in Isfahan, Iran. It was built by the Persian Safavid king, Shah Abbas II around 1650 C.E., on the foundations of an older bridge. It has 23 arches and is 105 meters long and 14 meters wide. [African-American] Althea GIbson. Tennis legend, and first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. c. 1970. Photo signed. 10 x 8 in. Signed in black marker "To Ray Kenter with Best Wishes, Althea". Gibson became the first African-American to compete at the U.S. National Championships. Gibson had a jam-packed eight-year career, with all of her major championships coming from 1956 to 1958, when she appeared in a stunning 19 major finals and won 11 titles, including single and doubles championships at the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Nationals. Gibson was the first non-white woman to win a major tennis championship, and only one other woman of color had claimed this honor until Serena Williams won the US Open in 1999. At the height of her career, she was ranked No. 1 tennis player in the world; after she retired from tennis, Gibson became the first African-American to compete on the women's professional golf tour in 1960.

She won 31 Grand Slam titles during her career, 2 Olympic gold medals, and was the Wimbledon champion a record-setting 8 times (record unbroken until 1990). In 1933, forty years before the "Battle of the Sexes" match in which Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in an exhibition game, Helen Wills defeated Phil Neer, then the #8 nationally ranked male tennis player in the US. This issue of Time featuring Wills across the cover was the same year as the "Match of the Century" wherein Wills (then ranked #2 in the world) faced Suzanne Lengdon, the #1 ranked French star. Measures approximately 8x10" and in very good condition. Tereshkova was the world's first woman to have flown in space as a Cosmonaut in the Soviet space program. She made this record in June 1963, on the solo mission Vostock 6. During her 3 day mission, she completed 48 orbits around the earth. The first male astronaut Yuri Gagarin only achieved spaceflight two years earlier in 1961, so her early involvement in the space program is remarkable. Boldly signed in blue ink in cursive Cyrillic with "Vostok - 6". Excellent condition with tiny crease in upper right corner. A signed portrait of a pioneering astronaut and important figure for women's achievements in space.

Archive of 10 press photos of Texas ranch life and its changes over the decades, from bison and cattle to prison ranch hands and migrant farmers. 1935-1978. Photos measure between 9 x 7 and 8 x 10 inches. Images show ranchers herding cattle, cows roaming the expansive Texas landscape, and bison mingling with cattle behind fence posts, a llama replacing the cattle in one image. When the United States annexed Texas in 1845, the government distributed public land for railroads and settlements, expanding new markets for Texas cattle ranchers. In one photo from 1943, five men in cowboy hats gather around a cow, while another oversees them, readying for the slaughter. The abundance of land coupled with growing economic demand created a unique opportunity for enterprising Americans who could not see dramatic changes coming ahead.
