The cover is also fading.Against the background of persecution of Jewish people during World War II Temple jointly founded with Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz the Council of Christians and Jews to combat anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice in Britain. In March 1943, Temple addressed the House of Lords, urging action to be taken on the atrocities being carried out by Nazi Germany. He said:"My chief protest is against procrastination of any kind. ... The Jews are being slaughtered at the rate of tens of thousands a day on many days. ... It is always true that the obligations of decent men are decided for them by contingencies which they did not themselves create and very largely by the action of wicked men. The priest and the Levite in the parable were not in the least responsible for the traveller's wounds as he lay there by the roadside and no doubt they had many other pressing things to attend to, but… Read More

Each will be concerned with ways to respond to new developments and concerns in the lif of the Church. The General Convention will hold its triennial meeting in Detroit, Michigan, July 2-11. Description:
This book is in very good condition. There is a little wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings."The question at issue. We have always had the ability to commit suicide or request euthanasia in times of serious illness-that is, intentionally to take our own lives to end our pain and suffering or to have others do this for us. Yet the acts have been prohibited within the Christian tradition from early times. Is there reason to change this prohibition today? This question, in turn, engages a larger one: How can we help one another to die a good Christian death?" - Introduction from Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia: Christian Moral Perspectives: The Washington Report

This book is in good condition. There is a large amount of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is a large amount of bumping on the corners. The fabric is torn on several places on the edges of the cover boards. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front cover board. The front cover board is embossed with the name of thr church to which this hymnal belonged. "The hymnbook has a central place in the worship of the church. The psalmist invites us to "sing to the Lord a new song." St. Paul urges the churches to praise God "in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs," The Reformation began in a burst of congregational singing. In our worship the people have always taken an active and significant part, and a zeal for corporate worship has featured every period of renewal within Protestantism. Our hymn book, therefore, bears testimony to our concern that worship should be first and foremost an act of prayer and praise to God, understood and entered into by… Read More

"In these days of high tension, both international and personal, the need for better understanding among people of all countries, all races, and all creeds is greater than ever before in the history of the world. An increased spirit of brotherhood, predicated on a clearer concept of the religious beliefs of others could well result in a new appreciation of their tenets, thereby creating an attitude of respect which is frequently lacking today both in business and in political contacts...." - Foreword from Days And Customs Of All Faiths

They particularly enjoyed the sense of otherness that the constant reminder of the fact of two sexes gave them. But there were others who did not like that particular fact. They preferred their own sex to the other sex and found their otherness in rejecting otherness. For a long time they kept quiet about their feelings, though it was clear to many who watched them and listened to them that they were what they were..." - Foreword from Homosexuality: A Symbolic Confusion

This book is in very good condition. The cover has some wear on the front, back, and spine and there is also some minimal wear on the edges. The corners are bumped. The pages are yellowed and tanned "This book is intended to help clergy and people to celebrate those holy men and women who are commemorated as 'Lesser Festivals and Holy Days" in the calendar of The Alternative Service Book 1980. Although 'Commons" are provided in that book for each class of saint (martyr, bishops and so on), these lack any particular reference to individuals. Thus many of those who are accustomed to a daily eucharist have found that repetition of this material, and especially the Collects, fails to provide a variety rich enough to celebrate the individuality of each saint in the calendar...." - Introduction from The Cloud Of Witnesses: A companion to the Lesser Festivals and Holy Days of the Alternative Service Book 1980

The previous owner has written his name on the inside of the front cover board. The pages are yellowed and tanned, but clear of any markings. "This book is now twenty-one years old. In these days of continuous research and changing historical fashions, twenty-one years is a long time: a time in which much may happen to a subject, much also to a book and its author. Any author must therefore feel pleasure if his first-born offspring survives to attain its majority. But his pleasure is likely to be tinged with some regret. As he rereads his old work he finds so much that, if he were to write it now for the first time, he would write very differently, but which, once written, he cannot change...." - Preface To The New Edition from Archbishop Laud 1573-1645
