Annotations there as well. This rare map covers Sibsagar in the north, the Naga Hills in the middle and the so-called Tribal Area in the south east.

Written for theauthor's daughter, Otta Swire of Orbost House, and first published in 1919, the fantasy adventure is based on and inspired by the Isle of Skye. This new edition features 24 contemporary photographs of Skye including one of Orbost House. - This beautiful edition is particularly hard top find.

Provenance: presentation copy, first page inscribed by Pierre Lamare to G.E. Pilgrim. Guy Ellcock Pilgrim (1875 - 1843) was a distinguished palaeontologist who explored numerous regions, including Bahrain where he was instrumental in finding the oil reserves. Offprint Mémoires de la Société Géologique de France, Volume VI, fasc. 3-4. The fruits of a two month expedition in 1928.

First edition. Mémoires de la Société Géologique de France, Nouvelle Série, No. 7. Rare. An important account of the geology of this remote lake area of Mongolia. It was on this expedition that Teilhard de Chardin wrote his mystical work Le Milieu Divin, which shows just how multi-facted was the mind of this paleontologist-priest.

1899. Meerut: The "Official" Machine Printing Press. 1899. 8vo. Original black cloth, gilt lettering to spine; pp. vi + 820; binding rubbed, internally very good. Provenance: bookplate of Helperby Hall in Yorkshire to front pastedown. A copy of the spoof ancient text on pig-sticking used by Baden-Powell in his book is tipped in to the ffep and bears the signature of E. Clive Coates, 15th Hussars, dated 2nd April 1902. Coates (1879 - 1971), later known as Sir Clive Milnes-Coates, was a baronet who served first in Meerut, where he joined the Tent Club, and later with the Royal Artillery in the First World War. Helperby was his ancestral home. Taped in to the rear of the book are three letters written to Coates in 1952, as he was trying to track down the Tent Club's original papers. Provenance: front pastedown with presentation inscription to Peter (?Guiser) for winning the HogHunter's Cup, the Club's top prize for pig-sticking. First edition thus. Very scarce. A fascinating record of meetings of the Meerut Tent Club, a society of British soldiers and civil servants devoted to pig-sticking based in what is now the state of Uttar Pradesh. Each meeting is recorded in minute detail, so there is a wealth of incident and adventure.

Paper-cutting is one of the oldest and most popular folk arts in China, and can be geographically divided into southern and northern styles, represented here by examples from Hebei Province.

Original pebble-grained cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt; the first 12 issues, two large folding maps (the same repeated, one in black, the other one in blue, one loose, with repaired tears), illustrations in the text; light marking to cloth, internally very good. Extremely rare. When the end of the First World War was in sight the United States under President Wilson where in search of new markets. Damascus had not fallen, but the American salesman got ready to step into the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, and replace the German and Austro-Hungarian Empires as trading partners in the region. A treasure trove of historical snapshots of the entire region, with valuable photographic material, not found in other publications. Not in COPAC; OCLC locates a run in New York Public Library (number of issues not given), University of of Chicago has four volumes in two.

Second edition of one of the the first full-length biographies of Peter the Great in the English language. At times ascribed to Daniel Defoe the book had appeared in 1723 under the title An impartial history of the life and actions of Peter Alexowitz. ESTC T88904.

1922. New York: Select Printing Company. Ltd. [nd, 1922]. 4to. Original colour paper wrappers with cover design by Soudeikine; pp 16 with colour illustrations and b&w photos; very good. Promotional programme for the 1922 tour of La Chauve-Souris revue's tour of America. Created my Nikita Balieff, this comedy, song and dance show was extremely popular in Russia and was brought to Broadway by the producers Morris Gest and F. Ray Comstock. It did 153 performances in New York during this season. This programme features artowrk by the renowned Russian set designers Serge Soudeikine and Nicolai Remisoff.

First edition. Thesiger lived among the Marsh Arabs of Iraq for eight years. The Marsh Arabs evokes the region and its culture, which has almost completely vanished.

First English edition of this travelogue of an arduous journey starting in Odessa, through the Caucasus into Persia, crossing from the Caspian Sea into modern Iraq, south of Baghdad, then turning West through Syria to Lebanon. Pages 67 to 281 in volume II are devoted to the journey from Persia to the Mediterranean. Thielmann was secretary to the German embassy in Saint Petersburg. He intended this travelogue to serve as a handbook for travellers of these vast regions and distances.
