Description:
Ross-on-Wye,, Jan. 1st, 1765.. Folio (560 by 390mm), key map, large-scale engraved map on six sheets, key sheet in original outline colour, large-scale map in original full-wash colour, later half-calf over marbled paper boards. Isaac Taylor was born in Worcester in 1730 and earned an early reputation as a surveyor of both county maps and city plans. His style was easily recognisable and gave particular emphasis to the hills on his county maps; Herefordshire 1754, Hampshire 1759, Dorset 1765, Worcestershire 1772, and Gloucestershire 1777. It is surprising that Taylor, like Rocque and Jefferys, was not successful in gaining the approval of the Society of Arts who appeared to favour the amateur surveyors rather than the professional mapmakers, Nearly all the awards went to applicants who produced just one or two maps rather than men like Taylor and Jefferys who between them published fifteen fine large-scale map, accurately surveyed and well engraved and in some instances more competent than most of… Read More

W is for Watercress Farmer Engraved and letterpress broadside, folded to make 4 pages Only known example of William Taylor's advertisement for his award-winning watercress. Known as """"poor man bread"""", watercress was first successfully cultivated en-masse in Kent from 1808. According to his advertisement, Taylor had been awarded a medal by the Royal Horticultural Society for the superior quality of his watercress, grown on his land in Uxbridge. By the 1860s, watercress was being brought into London by freight train. The history of watercress consumption is not a happy one. Near-destitute """"watercress girls"""", who sold the vitamin-rich plants by the bunch on the streets of London, were often the subject of art, and their distinctive cry of """"Fresh wo-orter-creases"""" was recorded as early as the late eighteenth century, as one of the first human sounds of… Read More

Cartography The present map draws on the cartography of Luis Teixeira (fl.1564-1613) - whose name appears in the large pasted title - a Portuguese cartographer from a famous mapmaking dynasty. He worked in Lisbon and the Portuguese colonies, but was also a friend of and collaborator with Dutch cartographers, contributing a map of Japan to Abraham Ortelius' atlas. Ortelius and Cornelis Claesz published five of his maps between them, and all were specifically advertised as based on his work, indicating that he was highly respected in… Read More

Maps,""The Red Sea Charting the Abyssinian Expedition Engraved chart, some minor foxing. This rare chart of the Red Sea is the result of the perilous surveying voyages undertaken by the sailors of the Indian Navy. In order to chart the dangerous waters of the Red Sea, a two-ship hydrographic expedition was launched under Captain Thomas Elwon and Commander Robert Moresby in 1829. Over the course of the following three years, the teams aboard the Palinurus and Benares surveyed the coastline and waters to ensure that the route from Europe to the East Indies was viable for new steam vessels. The diaries kept by crew members offer direct insight into their experiences in the Red Sea. As well as geographical and navigatory details, such as anchorages, fuel supplies and obstacles, these journals tell of the diseases that plagued both ships. Description:
[London,: HMSO,, 1855].. 810 by 580mm. (32 by 22.75 inches).. Folding lithograph plan. Rare epidemiological plan of Soho that accompanied the General Board of Health's exhaustive report into the, 1854, Broad Street cholera outbreak. Cholera is a contagious disease caused by the bacterium vibrio cholerae. The bacteria lives in warm, salty stagnant waters, and is contracted when an individual ingests water or food contaminated with the bacteria. In the most severe strains the bacteria multiplies dramatically within the individual's gut, causing the intestine to release increasing amounts of water, leading to severe diarrhoea, vomiting and rapid loss of the fluids, and can, if untreated, lead to death within 24 hours. The majority of epidemics are caused when the faecal matter of an infected individual contaminates the water supply. It has been estimated that, since the beginning of the nineteenth century, cholera has been responsible for some 50 million deaths, and although relatively simple… Read More

London,: National Unionist Association, Palace Chambers, , ND [but 1924.]. 844 by 535mm (33.25 by 21 inches).. Lithograph printed in blue, red and black, at neat line plus margins, folds flattened, a bit of offsetting at top, backed with poster canvas. The poster depicts David Lloyd George, leader of the Liberal Party, in 1924. He had previously been the Prime Minister of a Conservative-Liberal coalition during the war and kept much of that coalition with the Conservative party in order to win the 1918 election, which he did. The coalition had broken down by 1922, and Lloyd George had mended his fences with the other Liberal politician H.H. Asquith. In the 1924 election a reunited Liberal party ran against the Conservative party, led by Stanley Baldwin, which was advocating tariffs on imported goods. Free Trade had been a British policy for most of the Victorian and Edwardian area, especially within the Liberal party. This Conservative poster quotes David Lloyd George's opinions on protectionism… Read More

[Paris,: L'Huillier,, 1575].. 365 by 480mm (14.25 by 19 inches).. Double-page and folding woodcut map, two closed tears crossing the image extending from the left-hand margin, lower left-hand margin renewed. From the first edition, of the fourth volume of Thevet's 'Cosmographie universelle', 1575, here in a state not recorded by Burden, corresponding to his first state, but without the title above the neatline, even though there is a wide and untrimmed top margin. Although the geography of the map is mainly derived from that of Ortelius, Thevet, in his accompanying text, claims to have based his map of America on his own first-hand observations. Thevet did in fact visit America, returning from Brazil in 1555, and the map contains some interesting information not found in other maps of the period. Thevet has added placenames along the northeastern seaboard of North America. The map's depiction of southwest south America is a sort of compromise between maps showing the bulge in Chile, first depicted… Read More

After the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906, San Francisco underwent an intense period of reconstruction and development, which culminated in the city as the Thomas Brothers' map shows it. London,: Printed for Robert Sayer, No. 53, Fleet Street,, [c1792].. Large folio (540 by 370mm), title, 26 engraved charts (two folding, one single sheet, the rest double-page), contemporary full diced calf, skilfully rebacked, gilt spine in six compartments, gilt text on morocco label. Rare edition of Jeffery's West India Atlas. The atlas, first published in 1778, was designed to aid the highly lucrative sugar trade, which by this point accounted for around one-fifth of all imports to Europe, eighty percent of which was supplied by French and British colonies in the West Indies. Unfortunately, Europe's insatiable desire for sugar drove a viler – although no less lucrative – trade: that of the trafficking of slaves from the west coast of Africa to the Caribbean plantations. It is estimated that by the time the atlas was published, some 400,000 enslaved people were at work in the British Caribbean colonies. Unfortunately, Thomas Jefferys would not live to see the publication of his 'West Indian… Read More

The only known example of their advertised map is held in the Bibliothéque Nationale, Paris. The multi-sheet map was designed in such a manner that allowed for some of the sheets to be issued separately, as in the present example: "This can be shown by the fact that the title runs in a narrow border along the top, so that when made up as a wall map it may be pasted or cut out. Description:
London: Publish'd by Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet Street,, 1803.. 300 by 430mm. (11.75 by 17 inches).. Engraved print with aquatint. A view of Blackfriars Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral in the background. This was the third bridge to be built to cross the Thames, designed by Robert Mylne. The bridge was financed in a curious way - a large portion of the funding came from men who had refused posts in the Corporation of London. The posts required an oath of loyalty to the Anglican church, and if the recipient refused the office, or even a nomination for an office, he was fined, so it became a way of indirectly taxing non-conformists. By the time this print was made, the toll for crossing the bridge had been dropped. The shot manufactory tower shown was the cutting edge of military technology.
