Description:
[Poland, c.1920s]. [21]ff. Album. 9½ x 13 inches. Beige cloth with colorful woven onlay; cord-bound. 23 captioned photographs mounted on black cardstock rectos, approx. 4¾ x 8¾ inches, tissue guards. Brief wear to head and tail of spine and corners; very good. Made by the Workers' Society of Friends of Children in Warsaw, and given to their Chicago branch, this 1920s photograph album illustrates the strong link between Poles living in Warsaw and Chicago, reflecting the wider story of the Polish diaspora at that time. The album documents that Polish immigrants in Chicago supported social projects back in Poland, highlighting the cross-continental connections among Polish communities. The Workers' Society of Friends of Children was established in 1919 to provide childcare and education centers for workers' children and the children of the unemployed. The outreach included kindergartens, schools, summer camps, meals, and medical care. The album's photographs show children's homes and tents,…

Description:
[Boston: John Draper, 1759]. 4pp. 2° Light toning and creasing; very good. One of four known copies. A rare 1759 circular encompassing the "unseemly" behaviors of mixing wine, food, and song with religious ceremony in Colonial America. The text prints a resolution of the Council of Massachusetts Bay and a Declaration of the Ministers of the Province. Both are in response to "Revelling and Riot" on the days of ordination services and other "Irregularities, which have so much stain'd and dishonour'd such public Solemnities." In eighteenth-century century Massachusetts, days of ordination often included the brewing of special beers, elaborate feasts, suppers and balls, and large sums spent on more potent alcoholic drink. Alice Morse Earle in her book The Sabbath in Puritan New England (7th ed., 1891) cites a diarist who attended "a jolly ordination," adding "We lost sight of decorum." She also notes that "portable bars were sometimes established at the church-door, and strong drinks were distributed…

Description:
London: G.T. Foulis & Co., Ltd. (1962). Illustrated. Near fine in a very good lightly-rubbed and lightly-soiled dustwrapper, not price-clipped. First edition, first impression. Publisher's review copy of this illustrated "diary of the events which occurred in Cuba between January and July 1961." The author positions himself as one of the leaders of the ill-fated CIA-sponsored brigade to oust, without success, Fidel Castro from power: "'El Suizo' by which name Mr. Tanner is known and hunted by the Cuban secret police, fearlessly gives this true account of actual happenings which constitute a further chapter to the history of this strife-torn island." Surprisingly scarce and published the year following the failed Bay of Pigs invasion.

[Philadelphia? 1904-1905]. 28 x 20¾ inches. Former fold lines, as originally mailed. A number of short closed tears have been expertly mended with Japanese tissue. An unrecorded real estate and promotional map issued by the Atlantic City Estate Co., with offices in Pittsburg, Camden and Philadelphia. These maps are rare as they were printed in small quantities and their primary nature was as a selling tool. They served no long-term function and can be considered ephemeral. The company was selling lots in the subdivision of Pleasantville Terrace in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County and described it as "The Healthiest, Most Beautiful Suburb of Atlantic City, N.J." (Then, about fifteen minutes from Atlantic City.) The map shows a proposed trolly line running down Shuman Avenue and intersecting Anita, Beatrice, Corrine, Dorothy, Elsie, and Flora streets. The properties abutted against the Atlantic City Railroad line along its southern edge. To see more on the selling of the marketing of…

Description:
[Detroit: Kelvinator Sales Corporation. ca. 1930s-40s.] Quarto, cloth spine, stiff pebbled-styled black wrappers. Mild foxing; overall, very good. A total of 18 large 8 x 10 prints-most in color and taken from photographs, some actual photographs-all pitching the Yukon refrigerator built by this Michigan company. A repeatedly-used background image shows two buildings, perhaps from the Detroit skyline with one housing the Kelvinator Corporation's headquarters. This portfolio is unrecorded in OCLC and its rarity is due to its manufacture being solely for selling agents. The accordion-styled binding is such that 9 images can be displayed on each side. The portfolio could be stood up on edge for a dimensional display. Kelvinator's refrigerators were featured at the 1939-1940 World's Fair Exposition in New York in the "Town of Tomorrow" exhibition.
