Two pamphlets related to Brontë family. Both are used in good condition. Parsonage Museum pamphlet (40 pages) shows moderate general shelf wear and crease on front cover. Interior has no writing or vandalism. Haworth Parish pamphlet (8 pages including wraps) is used in good condition. General wear to wraps, no interior writing. Haworth not dated but circa 1960's (note that price is "9d" instead of "9p" which helps date things if you are familiar the history of English monetary system). No other interior writing or markings, one old corner fold. Binding is sound. 7.5 x 5 inches. Paginates: blank, (i)-xiv, [2], (1)-376, (1)-32, blank. Packed with illustrations. Complete as issued. The binding and the bookplate are the stars of this book. Two volumes in one. Contemporary half leather, decorative paper, 16 mo., 192 pages/192 pages. 14.5 x 9 cm. 2 volumes bound as one. Very good condition. Date is approximate; WorldCat suggests 1853 - 1860. Bookplate of prior owner "Dowager Lady Freake." Author of "Old Edinburgh" is usually listed as anon. Some sources suggest Thomas O. Summers which is a plausible choice. Paper cracked at front gutter but binding is solid. Interior is fine with age appropriate toning. A very attractive book. Google search of Dowager Lady Freake finds newspaper article March 13, 1897 listing her as guest at wedding; and mention in book titled 'Below The Fairy City.' Old Edinburgh is sometimes bound with Modern Edinburgh; sometimes by itself. Protestantism is sometimes 2 volumes. This is the second volume covering 1574 - 1685. Hardcover brown/gold cloth, first edition, 1835. Volume condition is Good: Boards show moderate wear, staining and patina. Spine with faded out paper label. Binding is stout. Moderate foxing throughout. Old pencil markings on blanks. Light tidemark affecting upper outer corner last ~25 pages (see image). Paginates: blanks, frontis, 252, 4 unpaginated plates, blanks. Legacy Library special edition. Reproduction of the 1898/1901 edition. 1966. Hardcover with slipcase. Laid in production slip describing this publication includes signature "Sam Houston." I have no idea who that is. Slipcase has moderate general shelf wear and is somewhat grubby but holding together fine. Book spine with some sun. Remainder of book is excellent. This volume describes a garden of poisonous plants - from which medication, or poison, is derived depending on the dose. Author also writes as Elaine di Rollo.

Wraps are very good with some scuffing. Author wrote several pamphlets of this nature so this is one of a series. Notable for photos of bodies in motion. Very interesting material. 1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. 1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Worn but complete issue. Articles by Nordhoff (on California), Trollope and Thackeray make this collectible. But article I found most fascinating was "The German Gambling Spas." Describes the luxurious experience of gambling away every cent and then doing yourself in (see scan). Vivid descriptions and illustrations of the crowd and various games of chance.
