Description:
The binding and the bookplate are the stars of this book. Two volumes in one. Contemporary half leather, decorative paper, 16 mo., 192 pages/192 pages. 14.5 x 9 cm. 2 volumes bound as one. Very good condition. Date is approximate; WorldCat suggests 1853 - 1860. Bookplate of prior owner "Dowager Lady Freake." Author of "Old Edinburgh" is usually listed as anon. Some sources suggest Thomas O. Summers which is a plausible choice. Paper cracked at front gutter but binding is solid. Interior is fine with age appropriate toning. A very attractive book. Google search of Dowager Lady Freake finds newspaper article March 13, 1897 listing her as guest at wedding; and mention in book titled 'Below The Fairy City.' Old Edinburgh is sometimes bound with Modern Edinburgh; sometimes by itself. Protestantism is sometimes 2 volumes. This is the second volume covering 1574 - 1685. This is the only copy I can find with these two volumes bound together. The fine binding is certainly fine but the Dowager Lady Freake…

This volume describes a garden of poisonous plants - from which medication, or poison, is derived depending on the dose. Author also writes as Elaine di Rollo.

Description:
Softcover pamphlet, 1933, 80 pages in very good condition. There is mild to moderate rippling to bottom of many pages consistent with water but there is no staining (see scans). Wraps are very good with some scuffing. Author wrote several pamphlets of this nature so this is one of a series. Notable for photos of bodies in motion. Very interesting material. Description:
1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Notes: This title may be found in the libraries of Thomas Jefferson & Benjamin Franklin. More Notes: This is how most books came from the printer and it was up to the buyer to decide on further binding. This appears to have never been bound.

Description:
First edition, hardcover, Boston, 1839. Original decorative cloth boards. Condition is Good: primary condition issue is moderate to heavy foxing throughout. No interior writing, marks, folds or vandalism. Binding is somewhat cocked. Front hinge is starting but should do fine with normal use. Maps are tissue paper with small tears at top of hinge not affecting maps in any way. Has cool but incomprehensible Icelandic chart of the world. Paginates: xii, 364, with two unpaginated folding maps, lacking all blanks. Please see images of the book you will receive. Howes S641, Field 1451. Notes: Washington Irving is generally credited for the 'Columbus discovered America' myth based upon his 1828 biography of Columbus. This book, published in 1839, is one attempt to refute the idea. Author is making a sincere attempt to document prior European explorations. His excellent work is hindered by presentation in the form of a dialog. For other early efforts to document European travels to America prior to 1492…

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Worn but complete issue. Articles by Nordhoff (on California), Trollope and Thackeray make this collectible. But article I found most fascinating was "The German Gambling Spas." Describes the luxurious experience of gambling away every cent and then doing yourself in (see scan). Vivid descriptions and illustrations of the crowd and various games of chance.
