Description:
Boston: The Merrymount Press, 1896. First Edition. First Edition. Bound in original publisher's light tan paper wrappers with superb Art Nouveau figure in rectangular box, lettering in dark green on cover. Daniel Berkeley Updike founded the Merrymount Press in 1893, and the early Quest series brought forward many of the artists and authors of the period, at first emulating the work of William Morris, but soon evolving into his own style of simplicity and graph woodcut artistry. This particular number is chock full of fine whole-page woodcut illustrations, including the work of C. M. Gere, Sydney Meteyard, E. G. Treglown and others, and essays by W. R. Lethaby, Inglis Sheldon Williams and others. A very well-preserved copy with slight chipping to the fragile paper-covered lower spine, edges. This is one of the more attractive early Merrymount Press items we have had in a long time, from a graphic, woodcut quality point of view.

I. with the portion of the catalogs in which they seem marked or turned down. And truly much obliged, D. B. Updike.î Letters by Updike are quite scarce. D. B. Updike (1860-1941), was an American printer and historian of typography. He obtained his first book-related job as a temporary volunteer in the library of the Providence Athenaeum. Description:
Paris: Edouard Rouveyre, 1887. First edition. First edition. Large 4to. A stunning Riviere binding, bound in full rich red morocco with elaborate geometric gilt linear design motif with dots, on both covers and spine, cover with decorative seal, thick dentelles with similar gilt motif, wonderful blue batik decorative doublure and free fly textile over paper. The binding design is taken from an example by Chambolle-Duru, which appears in the book on page 93. Certainly a unique Riviere binding, and the book itself is quite rare and an important compendium and record of bookbindings, dozens in photograveure, tissue guarded. While the covers remain bright and well-preserved, the spine has been rebacked with the original pieces applied between the raised bands. Even with this fault, a wonderful and historically significant binding.
