Description:
New York: Arno Press, 1964. USAF Historical Division, Aerospace Studies Institute, Air University, June 1964. Quarto, black cloth (hardcover), xviii + 146 pp. Neat former-owner (pilot) bookplate; otherwise, Fine, in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From Introduction to the Series: The publication of this series of official historical studies is at once a most significant contribution to our knowledge of the Second World War and a landmark in the development of commercial publishing. So much is published nowadays -- far beyond the capacity of any individual even to screen -- and so much is printed that ought never to see the light of day, that one tends to forget the considerable amount of writing well worth reading which rarely or never gets published at all. These volumes are an excellent example. Military monographs by foreign officers whose names are unknown to the public are not attractive items to most commercial publishing houses. But sometimes, as in the present case, they are… Read More

Description:
Melbourne: Kookaburra, (1975). Quarto, red cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 171 pp. Very Good, in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Very few photographs of aerial combat in World War I exist today, if they ever existed at all. Technology had not developed to the point where camera lenses or shutters were fast enough to capture the action. Art, on the other hand, caught what the lenses failed to get. The artists, men like Henry Farre, Charles H. Hubbell, Clyde Risley, Howard Chandler Christy, Jack Leynnwood and Joseph A. Phelan, either witnessed the action themselves or used the eyes of a participant to put down on canvas all of the drama, color and excitement of events. This then is a vivid portrayal of air action in World War I as shown in over 100 magnificent illustrations, both in blazing color and sharply etched monochrome -- a unique pictorial history of the initial use of aircraft on a major scale in warfare.

Description:
The University Press of Kentucky, (2011). Octavo, khaki cloth (hardcover), 325 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Doris Ulmann (1882-1934), one of the foremost photographers of the early part of the twentieth century, had a deep and lasting love affair with the dignity and complexity of the human condition. Born into a New York Jewish family with a tradition of service, Ulman sought to portray and document individuals from various groups that she feared would change or vanish altogether from American life. Inspired by the paintings of the European old masters and by the photographs of Hill and Adamson and Clarence White, Ulmann produced unique and substantial portrait studies of writers, educators, and society figures from her Park Avenue studio. Later, she traveled throughout the middle Atlantic, Appalachia, and the deep South. Using an old-fashioned view front camera, she sought to document the beauty, mystery, and diversity of the American people. Her subjects included Albert… Read More

Description:
New York: Scribner, (2004). First Edition. Octavo, tan & white boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 356 pp. Near Fine, in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Shocking and politically explosive, Craig Unger’s House of Bush, House of Saud presents an unflinching political counternarrative to official explanations of why America is now endangered by fundamentalist Islamic terrorism. Unger reveals how the personal fortunes and public policies of president George W. Bush, his father, George H. W. Bush, and their associates have long been entwined with the ruling family of Saudi Arabia -- and even with supporters of Osama bin Laden himself. The revelations in this troubling, deeply sourced account have already been cited by Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer in the United States Senate, and set the September 11 attacks, the two Iraq War, and the ongoing bombings by Al Qaeda in a startling new context certain to spark comment and controversy.

San Marino: Huntington Library, 1968. One of 50 copies printed by members of the HEH Preparations Dep-artment. Octavo, plain green sewn wrappers, [8] pp. Fine.”In 1893, only a year after William Morris had issued the Golden Legend, in which his Golden Type first appeared, 33-year-old Daniel Berkeley Updike left eh Riverside Press in Cambridge and set up his own establishment, as a Typographic Advisor, at 6 Beacon Street, Boston. From his two-room office, Updke wrote to Morris on August 3, 1893. The manuscript archives of Updike correspondence in the Huntington Library reveal no further exchange between them. Perhaps because his request was never granted, Updike and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue modified and enlarged the Morris font to create the Merrymount type of the great Altar Book, issued with the imprint of the Merrymount Press, in 1896...
