Stuttgart und Tubingen: Cotta'scher Verlag, 1844-1845. HB. Two volumes, in uniform green cloth with gilt lettering on spine, 8vo, all edges of text block marbled, viii, 561, (564)- 1055 pp. Each volume has separate title page and frontis illustration, but volumes paginated together. "Ludwig Uhland's two-volume, 357-song Alte hoch- und niederdeutsche Volkslieder (1844), is significant for the ways it connects songs with regional dialects in oral tradition to those in the national literary language, High German. Uhland's collection thus strengthens the nation from within, buttressing the edifice of a common literate musical tradition by demonstrating its foundation in regional and dialect traditions."
