Silk ground fragile, with a few thin tears but no significant losses; light soil; embroidered portions generally well-preserved, and colors bright. Very Good. Second banner 65cm x 50cm (ca 25" x 20"); photo-transfer on silk with embroidered ornaments. Slight fading to embroidered portions, but generally well-preserved and sound; Very Good. Both banners with firm provenance, purchased from the descendants of Mellie McKeever of Richwood, West Virginia. Mild edge-creasing; Near Fine. Relic of the short-lived political career of Los Angeles singer-songwriter Tom Hopke, who ran in California's 23rd District, encompassing portions of Los Angeles and Kern Counties, on the Peace and Freedom Party ticket. Hopke campaigned under the Peace and Freedom banner even though "we don't really agree on a lot of issues - it was just easier to get on the ballot with them" [see L.A. Promotes a lecture by Bernie Sanders, described as "The Socialist Mayor of Burlington Vermont," who at this time was running for the Vermont governorship. Sponsoring groups included the Unitarian Church; Democratic Socialists of America; Solidarity; and the Peace & Freedom Party. The flyer text spotlights Sanders's success at garnering working-class votes as a Socialist candidate; notes Burlington's "sister city" status with Puerta Cabezas, Nicaragua and the "tremendous amount of material aid to Puerta Cabezas" provided under the Sanders administration; and notes the endorsement of Sanders by the Rainbow Coalition and Jesse Jackson. A detailed account of the Baganda people of Buganda, within Uganda, including one hundred photographic illustrations. With sections on missionary work and the sleeping sickness.

Maroon cloth, stamped in gilt; dark blue coated endpapers; xlvi,351,[1],28,[4]pp; 32pp of publisher's ads at rear; 2 photogravures, folding color map, 16 halftone plates, numerous in-text halftones. Sound but with a slight forward roll, spine lightly faded, bumped and rubbed at edges and corners, both hinges cracking but holding, internally clean: around Very Good. Portal was a key figure in replacing the control of the Imperial British East Africa Company with a British Protectorate in Uganda. He was directed to report on this viability of this scheme, and negotiated a treaty with the Kabaka of Buganda, Mwanga II, but died before the offical declaration of the protectorate in 1894.

Depression-era novel set during the Roaring Twenties in a Pittsburgh boarding house. "The brilliant and mordant drama of a woman of the backstreet in the days of the great boom" (upper jacket panel). Surprisingly uncommon, with only 13 copies located in OCLC as of April, 2015. HANNA 3591.
