Description:
[90]; [16] ll.Extremely rare original edition of a highly influential Japanese medical text book, the Ihan Teiko, (General outline of medical precepts). The work contains the 3 parts summary of the Ensei Ihan (Medical precepts of the West), compiled by the celebrated Japanese physician and successful Rangaku-sha (Scholar of Dutch learning) Udagawa Genshin (1769-1834, or 1824/5?), first published in 30 volumes in the same year and containing translations and excerpts of imported Dutch books on anatomy and physiology.Owing to the vast volume of this book, his pupil Fujii Hohtei summarized it to the present 3 volumes. With these procedures, the book became widely known and read among physicians who had an interest in Dutch style medicine, especially the function of the organs, and tissue. Although this book shows some classical immaturities, it had great influence on Japanese physicians in promoting the level of knowledge from pre-modern to modern medicine, even in the time of the closed-door policy. Description:
[2], 221, [9] ll.Rare second Dutch edition of the first biography of the Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), originally published in Italian in Venice, 1560. The first Dutch edition was published at Antwerp in 1570. The present second Dutch edition of 1610 appeared in three issues: the present Amsterdam issue, another in Delft and a third in Dordrecht (this last by the printer Canin, supposedly differing slightly). Besides being an authoritative biography of an immensely important figure in European history that was first published shortly after his death, this publication includes a focus on the colonial endeavours in his time. Especially the Spanish conquests in South America are discussed in length, including Mexico and Peru. Alfonso de Ulloa (1529-1570) was a prolific translator of Spanish works into Italian who worked in Venice. His biography of Emperor Charles V can be placed in the context of Spanish Catholic propaganda against the rising Protestant and Muslim influences, which explains the… Read More

Description:
[7], [1 blank], 88, [4] ll.Second edition (first dated), of Alfonso de Ulloa's account of the Siege of Tripoli (1551), the Battle of Djerba (1560) and the Great Siege of Malta (1565): a series of conflicts between a large Christian Mediterranean Alliance and the Islamic Ottoman Empire for control of the Mediterranean. The Ottomans attacked and took Tripoli (modern day Libya) in 1551, held since 1530 by the Christian military order known as the Knights Hospitaller. A powerful naval force was sent to recapture Tripoli in 1560, but that force was defeated near the island of Djerba. The climax of the conflict was the Great Siege of Malta, when the Ottomans unsuccessfully attacked the island defended by the Knights Hospitaller, whom they had earlier defeated at Tripoli. With early 19th-century manuscript bibliographical note on flyleaf. First few leaves foxed (especially the title-page, which has some stains as well), some occasional minor spots and the edges of a few leaves slightly tattered. A good copy.… Read More

Description:
XV, [1], 328 pp.First edition; flyleaf with presentation inscription from the author to "Mr ... Regnaudiu". Important overview of Turkish trade, resources, infrastructure and municipal organisation by the diplomat David Urquhart (1805-1877). After two and a half years fighting in the Greek war of independence, Urquhart was invited to accompany Sir Stratford Canning to Istanbul in November 1831 as an advisor during negotiations to settle the Greek boundary. In 1832 Urquhart was sent to Albania to cultivate the support of Rechid Pasha, leading advisor to the Turkish sultan. Urquhart became a great supporter of Turkey, spending most of 1834 in the country, and encouraged the British government to ally with Turkey against Egypt. The present substantial book was written to inform the British political class of the possible commercial benefits of an Anglo-Turkish alliance. Some negligible discolouration in first few leaves, light wear to extremities. Description:
[16], 410, [6] pp.First and only edition, in Spanish, of an early work on Ethiopia by the Spanish Dominican monk Luis de Urreta (ca. 1570-1636), who wrote two volumes glorifying his own order's accomplishments in Ethiopia while diminishing those of the Jesuits. In the present work, the second of the two, he deals specifically with the Dominican presence in Ethiopia and the history of the Ethiopian saints. Like the first work, the Historia ecclesiastica published in 1610, it is a late example of a stream of geographical fantasies where Ethiopia was presented as the wondrous utopian kingdom of Prester John, and Urreta makes the case for an ancient Dominican presence in the country, arguing that they should thus be given precedence over the Jesuits as Catholic missionaries in that country. With information on two Dominicans who entered Mecca around 1580.From the library of Pierre Seguier, Lord Chancellor of France from 1635 to 1672, best known for his appearance in The three musketeers, with his arms and… Read More

Description:
[8] pp.The first of two editions (Landwehr) of Usselincx’s treatise on the importance of Dutch trade and commerce in the East and West Indies. This short book was part of the pamphlet war that accompanied the negotiations for an armistice between the Dutch States General and Spain that had been going on since 1606. During the negotiations, the Spanish side began to contest the right of the VOC to free passage and to free trade with the East and West Indies. The Flemish Dutch merchant Willem Usselincx (1567 - c. 1647) became one of the most outspoken critics of these planned restricions that would seriously affect his and his fellow merchant’s interest. His “Onpartydich discours opte handelinghe vande Indien” was, as could be expected, a not so much impartial comparison between the Spanish and Dutch interests in this matter. Usselincx took a firm stand on the Dutch side, arguing that the right to free passage and trade is a natural and innate freedom that should not become the bargaining chip of… Read More

Description:
Rare edition with the French captions, of a print series "plunged in noble bile" (Füssli) on the misery of a peasant in the Helvetic Republic (1798-1803). This so-called Bauernvaterunser, a type of parody in which the miseries of peasants during war are placed opposite the Lord's Prayer, tells the story of a shepherd who loses his home and his son during the war. Living the life of a beggar together with his grandson, he watches his community being torn apart. The print series refers to the uprising of Unterwalden in 1798 against the Helvetic Republic. During the following punitive expedition, the French army killed 368 inhabitants, including numerous women and children. In the print series however, it is a local "traitor" who sets fire to the shepherd's cabin and whom the shepherd later encounters in the woods. Together with the final plate, which mentions that even the most enlightened and distinguished men were torn apart from their families, this indicates that the author viewed the conflict… Read More

Description:
[40], 451, [3], [2 blank] pp.Second, enlarged edition of the autobiography of the influential Remonstrant leader Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644), one of the most eloquent preachers of his age. Wtenbogaert begins with his return to his native Utrecht in 1584, after having studied in Geneva with Theodore Beza. After a period of religious discord in Utrecht, Wtenbogaert moved to The Hague, where he became an influential member of the Remonstrant party and its leader after the death of Arminius in 1609. After the arrest in 1618 of influential Remonstants, including Johan van Oldenbarneveldt and Hugo Grotius, Wtenbogaert fled to Antwerp. He was permitted to return to the Dutch Republic in 1626, after which the autobiography more or less finishes. Bookblock seperated from flyleaves at the front, but the binding otherwise good. Text in very good condition, with only the title-page slightly browned and the last page with some minor thumbing.l Knuttel, Kerkgeschiedenis, p. 373; Rogge, Remonstrantsche… Read More
