Norwich: Michael Russell (Publishing) Ltd,, 1998-2005. This history of the Sudan was written by a former officer in the Sudan Political Service. Reviewing the second volume, Professor Peter Woodward noted that "The great merit of Udal's contribution is that he combines all [previous studies], giving generous recognition to other studies while combining them with much new material of his own in one comprehensive work" (Woodward, p. 162). A purchase invoice from the publisher is loosely inserted. Vol. 2 was issued without the map affixed to the rear endpaper: the map, along with an apologetic note from the publisher, are loosely inserted. 2 volumes, octavo. Description:
[Leipzig: Johann Gottl. Immanuel Breitkopf] for Carl Hermann Hemmerde, in Halle,, 1754. A fine example of a Breitkopf publication by an important 18th-century German woman philosopher First edition of a beautifully produced work of verse, printed by the celebrated German typographer Johann Gottlob Immanuel Breitkopf. "The only significant German woman writer of 'anacreontic poetry'", Johanna Charlotte Unzer (1724/25-1782) published two early books of verse: the present, a set of contemplative poems which "include illuminating autobiographical references and reflect Unzer's interest in philosophical issues and methods", and the lighter Scherzgedichten (joke or witty poetry) of 1751 (Dawson in Wilson, Schlueter, & Schlueter, unpaginated). "As poet laureate of the University of Helmstedt, she was one of the few female thinkers allowed to speak publically. Her Grundriss einer Weltweisheit für das Frauenzimmer (1751) is a survey of philosophy for female readers. She described Leibniz-Wolffian tenets,… Read More

With a note in volume I, "Bought at Lord Brabourne's Sale, 28 June 1893"; the elaborately named Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen, first Baron Brabourne of Brabourne was a well-known bibliophile and it is surely his purchase note in volume I that shows that he acquired the set from the fashionable London bookseller Bain in 1884 for seven guineas. Brabourne had a particular interest in English topography, and the marginal notes that pepper each volume are undoubtedly his. Attractive armorial bookplate in vol. I of John and Rosemary Pinches, writers on heraldry. a penciled note in volume III initialled by Rosemary Pinches, notes purchase at the Iveagh Bequest sale in the 1980s. New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1960. Inscribed copy in the first issue jacket First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author to the influential New York publisher: "For Ralph Sylvester John Updike". Sylvester (1934-2018) co-founded the publishing house Sylvester & Orphanos with his partner, the notable literary photographer and book dealer Stathis Orphanos (1940-2018). The two published a signed limited edition of Updike's essay collection Impressions in 1985. Impressions contains 11 essays of Updike's art criticism, some of which had never before been published. The artists and topics Updike discusses in that volume include Vermeer, John Henry Fuseli, Adam and Eve, and childhood. Sylvester & Orphanos published 25 limited editions over a period of almost 30 years, beginning in 1976 with their friend Christopher Isherwood's Christopher and his Kind. In addition, Updike sat for Orphanos, later stating that Orphanos's striking photo portrait of him unveiled "the definitive personality [he] always… Read More

Description:
London: Henry S. King & Co., , 1873. First edition of Upton's account of the bloodlines of British thoroughbreds. He was an early expert on the subject and enlisted the help of "an Arabian gentleman of a Nejdean family" (Preface), who confirmed this book's accuracy. Upton intended the work to "point out errors that have been committed in the breeding of our horse" (ibid). A captain in the 9th Lancers, Roger Dawson Upton (d. 1881), travelled to Arabia shortly after publishing this work in order to obtain pure-bred horses to improve the quality of British cavalry remounts. He also wrote Gleanings from the Deserts of Arabia (1881). Octavo. Original brown cloth ruled in black, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, large gilt block of a horse's head on front cover, green coated endpapers, binder's ticket of "A. Webster and Larkin" to front pastedown. Hand-coloured wood-engraved frontispiece by the author, with tissue-guard, and 4 folding pedigrees at the rear. London: London Missionary Society,, 1914. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Yours in sincerity, Bernard Upward". Upward (1873-1944) was a Christian missionary and sinologist. From 1905 to 1927 he lived in Hankou, one of the three towns which form the modern city Wuhan, where he witnessed China's 1911 Revolution first-hand. Upward ends his extraordinary account presciently, describing how, in Hankou, "it was a commonplace to hear the remark, 'The Revolution is over.' No greater mistake could have been made. It had but just begun" (pp. 122-3). Octavo. Original red cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black, decoration to front cover in black and yellow. Photographic frontispiece and 7 photographic plates by the author, double-page map to rear.
