A delightful example of one of Uelsmann's more lighthearted and humorous darkroom manipulations, showing a leafless tree growing of of a massive hamburger (on a bun, with tomato). On the verso, Uelsmann has signed, titled, and dated the picture, with an inscription presenting it to poet Russell Edson. Edson and Uelsmann collaborated on the photographer's 1971 Aperture monograph, in which Uelsmann's composite images were accompanied by Edson's enigmatic prose-poems. In his inscription, Uelsmann writes: "Dear Russell Edson, My images feel nice next to your words. . .

Note on which Uhland orders a volume of "Geistliche Lieder" from a bookseller in Nördlingen. Ludwig Uhland (1787-1862) set aside his early poetical inclinations to pursue a career in liberal politics and scholarship. A member of the Frankfurter Nationalversammlung following the revolutions of 1848, he would become a professor at Tübingen, where he helped establish the field of modern German literary studies.

London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1919. First edition. Cloth. Bookplate on front pastedown; hinges mended neatly with glue; endsheets offset.. 8vo, 521pp; frontispiece, illustr.; original blue cloth. Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), an anglo-catholic writer and scholar of religious mysticism, was responsible for rediscovering and promoting the work of the medieval Italian poet Jacopone da Todi, author of the Stabat Mater. This book was reviewed favorably in "The Dial" by Marianne Moore, by which means it may have come to the attention of Robert McAlmon, who had befriended Moore and was arranging the publication of her first book of poems. This copy belonged to McAlmon his bookplate is on the front pastedown. McAlmon's marginal marks in ink appear on a few pages. The selection of Jacopone's poetry is extensive, comprising about half of the book's content.

Four page leaflet printed on a single bifolium, approx. 7 X 9-1/4 inches. Multi-point program called for by the pioneering public-interest lobbying group founded by John Dewey, published on the eve of the 1932 election that would bring Franklin D. Roosevelt into the White House.

Folding card, printed on both sides, approx. 8 X 9 inches unfolded. Official card to be filled out for the federal unemployment census, 1937. With spaces and check boxes for collection of data and a "Message from the President of the United States" printed over a facsimile signature of Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed "To Every Worker. . ." Distinctive relic of the New Deal era.

London: Press Department of the Soviet Embassy, 1954. Folded once horizontally, discoloration spots and a small hole in middle. Broadsheet, 8 1/4 x 13 1/4 in., printed on both sides on white paper. News sheet published by the Soviet Embassy in London discussing the Geneva Conference's agreement on armistices in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, Premier Molotov's statement on the conference, as well as brief news on Soviet astronomers in Britain and Soviet representation at the World Congress on Cancer.

London: Central Books Ltd. / Farleigh Press Ltd, 1946. Neat ink notation in one corner; folded twice and lightly used. Bifolium leaflet, 7-1/2 x 10 in. Press-quotes and comments assembled a Soviet propaganda aimed at English readers in the aftermath of the Second World War and shortly after Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech.

Oblong poster announcing the event at the Shrine Auditorium featuring representatives from the realms of diplomacy, government and Hollywood, with a lengthy list of sponsors, patrons and supporters in the margins including such notables as Walter Huston, Marc Connelly, John Howard Lawson, Walter Abel, Edward Chodorov, Waldo Salt, Orson Welles, Olivia de Havilland, Michael Curtiz, Robert A. Millikan, and many others.

Moscow: Torgsin, 1935. Small folded tear to one edge, very good indeed. Folding broadsheet, single leaf, approx. 16 X 12 inches, folded to make narrow multi-panel leaflet. Menu/catalogue of goods available through Torgsin, the state-sponsored store that made unobtainable goods available to Soviet citizens with foreign currency. Alternatively, as promoted with this document, friends or relatives in the West could place orders through a U.S. agent - identified here on the front panel as "Irving Spero. . . Los Angeles" -- which would then be picked at up a local Torgsin stores in the USSR. Items on the priced list range from various staple food products, to textiles, shoes and other clothing, household utensils, soaps, perfumes, and miscellaneous items including radios, accordions, bicycles, slide rules, samovars, and electric percolators. Announcement of a benefit ball in support of the Soviet Union as they were fighting off Nazi German invasion. The event leaflet promises "dancing and singing by national groups, colorful national costumes, Russian Buffet.

(Moscow): n.p., 1959. Very good. 8vo, unpag. pamphlet in card wrappers with thin plastic lamination; illustrated. Booklet published in the Soviet Union in English to accompany an exhbition celebrating Soviet achievements in technology and science. The cover image is a depiction of the Sputnik space capsule that initiated the "space race" in 1957. Illustrated throughout with photographs and charts.

New York, 1941. Pencil mark; two horizontal folds; very good. Handbill. approx. 7 x 10 in., printed on one side only of light green paper. A printed form seeking signatures from allied organizations in support of the Transport Workers Union in its current dispute with New York. Though undated, this would appear to date from the period in 1941 when the city had consolidated control of previously private subway lines and was aiming to keep the TWU out.

Narrow broadside, printed on one side of single leaf of blue paper, approx. 5 X 12 inches. Broadside with lyrics to three Yale fight songs: "Undertakers Song", "Sons of Eli" and "The Bulldog Song" likely printed for ease of use at football games.

Fritz von Unruh (1885-1970) the son of a general was on the path to a distinguished military career but, traumatized by his experience of the First World War, he embraced a literary life and became an outspoken pacifist.

Boston: Sherman, French & Company, 1911. First edition. One signature partly sprung covers soiled and somewhat rubbed, good.. 8vo, original boards with white cloth spine and tips. The poet's first book, an odd association copy, inscribed by Untermeyer around the time of publication: "To Hudson Maxim, hoping that here and there (especially here) a line will strike his fancy. . . . Louis Untermeyer, New Year, 1912." The recipient was a well-known American entrepreneur and inventor who, simultaneously with his rival brother, developed explosives and automatic weapons that had a devastiating impact during the First World War. Hudson Maxim' produced the first smokeless powder in America, which was put into use by the U.S. Army in 1901.

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1925. First edition. Fine in a spine-sunned dust jacket with a touch wear to the spine ends and extremities.. 8vo, 368pp; yellow cloth stamped in black. A nice copy of the author's third novel. Critically acclaimed in his time, most of which he spent as an expatriate in France, Updegraff has since slipped into neglect. He is perhaps best remembered today for having been the Yale roommate and longtime close friend of Sinclair Lewis. The uncommon dust jacket features an illustration by Hans Flato.
