Description:
London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, 1919. First edition. Cloth. Bookplate on front pastedown; hinges mended neatly with glue; endsheets offset.. 8vo, 521pp; frontispiece, illustr.; original blue cloth. Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), the anglo-catholic writer and of the principal scholars of religious mysticism, was responsible for rediscovering and promoting the work of the medieval Italian poet Jacopone da Todi, author of the Stabat Mater. This book was reviewed favorably in "The Dial" by Marianne Moore, by which means it may have come to the attention of Robert McAlmon, who had befriended Moore and was arranging the publication of her first book of poems. This copy belonged to McAlmon and bears his bookplate on the front pastwedown; he has made marginal marks in ink on a few pages. The selection of Jacopone's poetry is extensive, comprising about half of the book.
