Original paper wrappers. 9.25" x 5.75" inches. Modern paper ex libris pasted down to interior of wrapper. The Oberlin-Wellington Rescue was a principal event in the history of abolitionism an dleading up to the Civil War. On September 13, 1858, federal authorities in Oberlin, Ohio appreheended the escaped slave John Price. Under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1859, any slaves found in a free state must be retunred to their owners. Oberlin was a hotbed of anti-slavery activism, so the marshals took Price to nearby Wellington to avoid abolitionists. Upon hearing of Price's capture, residents rushed to Wellington and demanded that Price be freed. The deputies refused. Rescuers responded by storming the hotel where Price was being held and freed him. Via the underground railroad, Price made his way to Canada. Thirty-seven of the… Read More

Description:
Photo album documenting the military service of US Army soldier who was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, Ft Williams, Maine, and elsewhere mostly throughout the Northeast in 1934-1940. 149 black and white silver gelatin photographs, mostly 2.5" x 3.5", in a suede bound Service Album measuring 11" x 7". Many photos captioned with names of fellow soldiers, friends, and placenames. Several photos of tanks, including the older Mark VIII, famous for its usage in WWI, a French Renault tank, a Ford 3 ton tank, and the newer Christie tank. In addition to these shots of WWI tanks, we see Doughboy Stadium at Fort Benning, giving a slightly eerie impression in that the impact and legacy of WWI is still present and powerful, all the while the world is lurching forward towards another cataclysmic war just months after many of these photos are taken. The soldier who put this album together had a keen sense of humor, as did his comrades, which one can pick up on in the autograph page at the beginning with names,… Read More

Many free blacks and emancipated slaves voluntarily served in the Union Army, forming the United States Colored Troops (USCT). Some also became scouts, guides, spies, cooks, hospital workers, and blacksmiths contributing immensely to the Union war effort for the balance of the Civil War. Nearly 40,000 black soldiers died over the course of the war, but drawing upon the training they received in the military, many former black troops became community leaders… Read More

Portrait of an African American 25th Infantry sharpshooter. 3 3/8 x 4 7/8 in. Silver gelatin photograph on cardstock mount. Circa early 20th century. Verso bears several indecipherable pencil inscriptions. The featured African American sergeant wears a sharpshooter badge, in the shape of the cross on his chest, along with an infantry device and insignia on his cap indicating Company K, 25th infantry regiment. The 25th served from 1866 to 1957, and was one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" units, seeing action in the American Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War and World War II. Based on his uniform, this sharpshooter had his photo taken after 1902 and before America's entry into WW.I. The sharpshooter badge on his uniform is second highest marksmanship award that can be granted to a soldier, requiring very high accuracy during their examination. Although these badges are awarded to both officers and enlisted soldiers alike, as a matter of U.S. Army tradition, only… Read More

[African American Civil War Military] Special Order Number 118. Dated December 3rd, 1863. Handwritten and signed on headquarters letterhead of the Draft Rendezvous, Long Island, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. Measures approximately 9.5" x 7.5". This document assigns Sergeant Kern of the 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry to the Colored Detachment, and orders him to report immediately to his commanding officer Lieutenant J.M. Deane. This unspecified Colored Detachment was one of the nascent black units that were being mustered in 1863 following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The 29th Mass was a notable unit, taking heavy losses in the Petersburg Campaign including the assault On Fort Stedman, which was the last serious attempt by Confederate troops to break the Siege of Petersburg. The Order is signed by Lt. William Augustus Hill, 19th Mass. This came from the estate of Lieut. John Milton Deane, the commanding officer who Sgt. Kern was assigned to, and who was also a recipient of the… Read More

Civil War tintype of an African American cavalryman, likely taken in the field. 2 5/8 x 3 1/8 in. Circa 1864-5. Seated subject wears a kepi with indecipherable device and infantry jacket with sleeve embroidery. Among the US Colored Troops, cavalrymen were especially rare with just two regiments, the 9th and the 10th Colored Cavalry, being raised after the conclusion of the Civil War. Black soldiers constituted about 10 percent of the U.S. Regular Army, even though they were segregated into just a few units. Despite the inglorious origin of most Black troops, who usually began as former slaves pressed into service as laborers, these men would receive acclaim for their combat. These Black troops would go on to fight in the Indian Wars, where they became known as the Buffalo Soldiers, nicknamed by Native Americans who likened their hair to bison fur. Some historians argue that when slaves worked with the Union during the Civil War, they were effectively participating in a slave rebellion on a massive… Read More

This pamphlet titled Patrol Squadron Twenty-Two PBM-Mariner Tactics Versus Fighters instructs American pilots in WWII on how to maneuver against enemy fighters. 10.5" x 8" inches. 19 pages. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time.. This manual primarily comes in the form of a Q&A section and a series of diagrams of maneuvers on how to evade and attack. It was prepared by Lieutenant W.K. Lange of the US Naval Reserve and includes a foreword by him. Covers maneuvers such as jinking, skidding, hummingbird belly shots, and overhead attacks. The audience of this pamphlet would have been pilots of the PBM-Mariner, a patrol bomber that specialized in detecting and sinking submarines in the Pacific Theater. They would continue to be used in Korea and in limited cases up until the mid-1950s until their replacement by the Martin P5M Marlin. The front page of this pamphlet is loose and… Read More
