Wearing at the corners. Name on front fly leaf. Antonio De Ulloa (1716-1795) was a colonial administrator and the first Spanish governor of Louisiana, deposed in 1768 after a Creole revolt.

1925. Fine. 8" x 6" black and white platinum print on heavy paper mounted on larger rice paper sheet and matted to 14"x11" pencil signed by Ulmann on the mount, Image condition fine. Provenance; through the trade from the heirs of Albert Shaw. Shaw(1857-1947) gained fame as the outspoken progressive editor of the American Review of Reviews, a position he held for nearly fifty years. This portraiture almost certainly an unused outake from Doris Ulmann's gravure portfoilio "A Portrait Gallery of American Editors", published in a limited edition by Barnaby Rudge in 1925. Though best known at this time for her portraits of intellectuals and art world figures, it was her photographs of poor Appalachian and African-Americans published in such volumes as "Roll Jordan Roll"(1933) and "Handicrafts of the Southern Highlands" (1937) thgat would establish her reputation as one of the Twentieth century's finest social portraitists. She died young in 1934 and her signed prints have long commanded a premium
