Clean, tight, unmarked; very light wear to upper inside corner; otherwise absolute minimal wear; appears unread; This anthology envision winters of the future, with stories of scientists working together to protect narwhals from an oil spill, to bring snow back to the mountains of Maine, to preserve ecosystems - even if they have to be under glass domes. They're stories of regular people rising to extraordinary circumstances to survive extreme winter weather, to fix a threat to their community's energy source, to save a living city form a deep-rooted sickness. Some take place after an environmental catastrophe, with luxury resorts and military bases and mafia strongholds transformed into sustainable communes; others rethink the way we could organize cities, using skybridges and seascrapers and constructed islands to adapt to the changes of the Anthropocene. Description:
Lawrence, KS: University Press of Kansas, 1996. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; very light wear to spine extremes of dust jacket; otherwise absolute minimal wear; Unrau tells the story of how an alcohol-sodden society introduced drink to the Indians. That same society then instituted futile policies to control the flow of alcohol. He dispels the racial-deficiency theory and debunks the belief that prohibition was carried out by well intended reformers. Scholars have often viewed the sale of alcohol to Native Americans to trick them into unfair land and trade deals. But Unrau makes it clear that alcohol consumption by Native Americans was the inevitable consequence of cultural confluence, not of conscious white subversion. Indian inebriation in the 19th century, he shows, essentially mimicked the habits of white Americans who were aspiring to integrate the natives into the cultural mainstream.

Toronto, ON, Canada: McClelland & Stewart, 1996. Soft cover. Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; previous owner made a couple of comments on the book on the title page; otherwise spine straight and uncreased; very minimal wear; Two worlds are intertwined in this hauntingly beautiful story as it moves from Toronto to the English moors and to Venice, Italy. The time frame shifts between present and past, linking the lives of a young Bronte scholar, a turn-of-the-century female balloonist, and an elusive explorer with the ghost - or the memory - of Emily Bronte. Urquhart reveals something about the act of artistic creation, the ways in which stories enter our lives, and about the cyclical nature of love throughout time.
