Description:
HarperCollins Publishers, 2006. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good . 11x1x12. In a epic journey that has taken them from the clubs of Dublin to the stadiums of the world, U2 have sold over 130 million albums, been number one all over the world, revolutionized live performance, spearheaded political campaigns and made music that defines the age we live in. From the anarchic days of their Seventies punk origins through their Eighties ascent to superstardom with the epic rock of The Joshua Tree, the dark post-modern ironies of Achtung Baby in the Nineties and their 21st-Century resurgence as rock's biggest and boldest band, this is a tale of faith, love, drama, family, birth, death, survival, conflict, crises, creativity . . . and a lot of laughter. Told with wit, insight and astonishing candor by the band themselves and manager Paul McGuinness, with pictures from their own archives, U2 by U2 allows unprecedented access into the inner life of the greatest rock band of our times.

Description:
Island Press, 2004. Softcover. Like New. 6x0x9. Stewart Udall argues that the overblown and ahistorical emphasis on a wild west has warped our sense of the past. For the mythical Wild West, Stewart Udall substitutes a compelling description of an Old West, the West before the arrival of the railroads, which was the home place for those he calls the wagon people, the men and women who came, camped, settled, and stayed. He offers a portrait of the West not as a government creation or a corporate colony or a Hollywood set for feckless gold seekers and gun fighters but as primarily a land where brave and hardy people came to make a new life with their families.

Description:
J. B. Lippincott, 1964. Hardcover. Very Good/Good . Chipping and edgewear to dustjacket. The Age of Mountaineering is undoubtedly the most important of all Mr. Ullmanâs books. In it he tells the story of manâs conquest of the worldâs high places, from Paccard and Balmat on Mount Blanc in 1786 to Hillary and Tenzing on the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953. The book does not pretend to be an exhaustive history of mountaineering. Rather, it is a lively running account of the classic events that have made mountain climbing such an adventurous and fascinating pursuit and is frankly slanted more for the general reader than for the already converted mountaineer.More significant than the accounts themselves is the underlying philosophy which permeates the entire book. âMountaineering,â Mr. Ullman says, âis not merely a story of the conquest of mountains, but of the conquest of fear. It is not merely a…

Description:
Oregon State University Press, 2007. Softcover. Very Good. 5x0x8. In Very Good+ condition. Empty Nets is a disturbing history of broken promises and justice delayed. It chronicles a native peopleâs fight to maintain their livelihood and culture in the face of an indifferent federal bureaucracy and hostile state governments. In 1939, the U.S. Government promised to provide Columbia River Indians with replacements for traditional fishing sites flooded in the backwater of the Bonneville Dam. Roberta Ulrich recounts the Indiansâ sixty year struggle, in the courts and on the river, to persuade the government to keep its promise. From the beginning, the battle was intertwined with the tribesâ larger effort to assert treaty guaranteed fishing rights. Ulrich deftly examines a host of other issuesâincluding declining salmon runs, industrial development, tribal self government, and recreationâthat became enmeshed in the…

Description:
Lyons Press, 2004. Trade paperback. Like New. If the captivating smile of a young Hemingway crouched over a lion isn't enough to pull you inside the covers of The Greatest Hunting Stories Ever Told, the remarkable prose you'll find throughout its pages will. Its target is serious writing, and it bags some powerful literary prey. Lamar Underwood, long an editor at Sports Afield and Outdoors, has assembled a stellar collection from the pens of Hemingway (naturally), Faulkner, Turgenev, Thomas McGuane, Vance Bourjaily, Patrick O'Brian, Robert Ruark, and Teddy Roosevelt, all of whose prose hunts for big answers as well as big game. While clearly addressed to the fraternity of hunters, the essays and stories in this collection transcend the boundaries of the field. McGuane, writing passionately about how the hunt for food defines who we are in "The Heart of the Game," observes, as Sitting Bull did before him, "when the buffalo are gone, we will hunt mice, for we are hunters and…

Victor Gollancz LTD, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. Like New/Very Good. 11 B&W plates, 5 maps & diagrams and text describing the life of the "father of mountaineering" who set alpine climbing on its modern course. Albert Frederick Mummery (10 September 1855, Dover, Kent, England â 24 August 1895, Nanga Parbat), was an English mountaineer and author. Although most notable for his many and varied first ascents put up in the Alps, Mummery, along with J. Norman Collie, Geoffrey Hastings, and two Gurkhas are also the first men in recorded history to have attempted to summit one of the Himalayan eight-thousanders.Their innovative, light-weight endeavour upon Nanga Parbat in 1895 proved ill-fated; Mummery and both Gurkhas died in an avalanche whilst reconnoitering the mountain's Rakhiot Face. The first man to summit on Nanga Parbat, the legendary Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl, described Mummery as "one of the greatest mountaineers of all time
