Complete with 56 full page engraved plates in volume 1 and 80 full page engraved plates in volume 2. Notable for its very large linear engravings which provide extensive coverage of the numerous sculptures and wall paintings in the interior of the building, as well as ground plans and perspective views. Gerardi's text is based on previous histories of the building, but adds descriptions of tombs and other features added during and after the basilica's restoration by the architect Alessandro Galilei in the 1730s.Later quarter morocco binding; spine in seven compartments with raised bands; morocco lettering labels, gilt; cloth sides; marbled endpapers. Full nave morocco; spine in six compartments, gilt, gilt rules on the boards, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, decorated endpapers, for Bretano's probably by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Trace of rubbing but essentially a fine copy in a fine binding. .

(20),455 (8),387pp. Folding map of California in volume I; 4 copperplates (including frontispieces) each with two images, for a total of 8 images. Full speckled calf, nicely rebacked at an early date, retaining the original lettering labels. Light wear especially to the corners, the map with two closed marginal tears not affecting the image, else a very good set. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Joseph Copley, Bart, as well as small circular leather bookplate of 'CFH'. This is the first translation into English (or any other language) of Father Venegas' 'Noticia de la California', published in 1757 in Madrid (contrary to the 1858 date found on the title page of this edition.) Contemporary vellum, yap edges, manuscript titles on the spines. Four folding copperplate maps: Vol. 1 contains the Mapa de la California, y su Costa Oriental Nuevamente Descubierta, based on Padre Kino's revolutionary map. Vol. 3 contains three maps: Seno de California; Carta de la Mar del Sur; and Mapa de la America Septentl. etc. The first map has a professional, nearly invisible, repair of a closed separation across the upper third of the image, no loss. Scarce first printing of the diary of the Archbishop of Puebla, recalling events of the religious persecution in Mexico in 1927. During that time he was exiled for two years in Texas, as were most Mexican Catholic Bishops. "...advertimos que al dar el nombre de mártires a algunos de los sacerdotes y fieles, sacrificados en la actual persecución religiosa en México, ...." In Spanish. A second edition was issued in 1929.

The spine is constructed of stepped planes. The text consists of individual pages as well as recessed leaves, including the title page, which also incorporates stretched open weave cloth suggesting net stockings. Designed and produced by D'Ambrosio . Printed on handmade 'Misty Rose" paper with a Vandercook No. 4 proof press in Van Son's brick dust and slate gray inks. A fine copy of a skillfully designed artist book. One of 75 copies and 10 artist proofs; this is number 8. A short story about two Parisian prostitutes originally written in the 19th century. .

Frontispiece and 4 pp facsimiles of the original manuscript and an early printing.One of 157 copies, signed by the printer J. C. WIlkins. This is number 138. The gilt is significantly rubbed, there are old tape marks and offset from a clipped on the endpapers, else this is a good copy. Some of these poems are racy; no wonder this was printed for private distribution. A later editions had many suppressions. In addition, Villon sometimes wrote in Parisian slang, which Payne translates into equivalent English. .

A 13th or 14th century Greek fragment of an Arthurian tale discovered by Von der Hagen in the Vatican Library and published by him in 1821. This is the first translation into English of the fragment. It is followed by a facsimile of Von der Hagen's publication, which contains a length preface (in Latin), his recension of the Greek fragment, and then his Latin translation of the Greek. .

The hinges are weak and show some separation, but the boards are well attached. The frontispieces are foxed and that has offset onto the first few pages, including the endpapers. Otherwise, the textblocks are in very good to fine condition. Armorial bookplate in volume one with the Briggs motto "Fortiter et Fideliter". Also with the smapp stamp of A. C. Briggs on each free front endpaper. EAch volume with a cloth dustwrapper and housed in a matching slipcase. Rare in boards. .

The publisher's glassine jacket is present; it has two short closed marginal tears and a small tear on the rear board at the fold else is in very good condition.

A small rubber stamped date (August 2, 1928) is impressed in the lower left corner margin of the first leaf, some glue staining at the binding edge else this is a fine copy of Wynkyn de Worde's craftsmanship. Folios CXXIVI (i.e., CXXVI) and CXXVII, which contain the ending of the life of St. Aldheme, Abbot of Malmesbury, and the beginning of the life of St. Austin (Augustine of Canterbury). 'The Golden Legend' (Legenda Aurea), written in the 13th century by the Dominican Jacobus de Voraigne, was probably the third best-selling book in mediaeval Christendom, after the Bible and the Imitation of Christ. Large leaf, 11 by 16 inches, finely printed on laid paper with a watermark of a cross, a tower and a trefoil clearly seen in the margin between the two columns of print. This leaf printed in black with spaces for manuscript initials which were never put in. From 'La Mer des Hystoires' Tom. 2: 'Le Martyrologe des Sanctz', and commences with the end of the Martyrology for May 19th through June 4th, and leaving room for a large initial 'A' at the initial entry for June. Printed in Batarde, a typeface used mainly in the incunabular period and mainly only for works in the vernacular. This is among the first titles printed in French.
