London: John Stockdale, 1801. Hardcover. Near fine. First octavo edition and second edition overall. Six volumes uniformly bound in recent quarter leather and marbled boards, complete with two large folding maps/charts and 17 folding plates; 2 pages of ads at the end of Volume VI. Occasional light foxing, a couple small splits/tears to maps, else fine. Signature of Alfred Fowler on the front free endpaper of Volume I and the rear pastedown of Volume II. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America -- discovering previously unknown geographical features in each locale. In three seasons' work, Vancouver surveyed the coast of California with remarkable accuracy, visited a number of the Spanish settlements in Alta California, investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca, circumnavigated Vancouver island, and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay. Richmond, VA: Virginia Historical Society, 1958. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. xi, 475 pp, original printed wrappers. Clean, tightly bound, unmarked; minimal wear to wraps. Publication date is given as March 1959 on cover, but as 1958 on title page. Highly valuable source for understanding the inner workings of the short-lived Confederate government. Vandiver writes in the Foreword to the Proceedings of the First Confederate Conference, "The proceedings presented here are, somehow, more than transcripts of the actions of a Congress; they are more than a diary of a legislative body. In these proceedings may be seen reflected the fears, the hopes, and the realities of the Southern people at war; mirrored in the movements of many political mannequins--mannequins who defy tradition by having minds of their own....Captured in the daily routine of their Congress is an amazing, kaliedoscopic view of the war as the Confederates knew it."

Cleveland: Arthur H. Clark Company, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Volume V of Spain in the West, A Series of Original Documents from Foreign Archives. 350 pp, frontispiece portrait, and other illustrations including early maps of California, facsimiles of documents. In publisher's original dark red cloth, gilt titles, top edge gilt. Minor rubbing to extremities, else fine. This is the first English translation of this work, from the original manuscript in the archives of Mexico; the book was first published in Mexico in 1754. Venegas' history of Salvatierra is extremely valuable for its description of the founding of the first missions in Baja California. Salvatierra was instrumental in the founding of the first missions in California, now located south of the Mexican border, and helped Spain gain a foothold on the California peninsula. Salvatierra founded the mission of Loreto in Baja California in 1697, thereby giving Spain a firm foothold on the California peninsula, and leading to…
