Lisbon, Na Officina de Henrique Valente de Oliveira, 1663.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 4°, disbound. Woodcut initial and tailpiece. Minor soiling. Final line on title page cut close at lower margin. In good to very good condition. (1 l.), 13, (1) pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this poem celebrating the victory of twenty-year-old D. Afonso VI at the Battle of Ameixial on June 8, 1663. In Spain it is usually called the Battle of Estremoz; here it is referred to as the Battle of Canal, after the parish near Évora where the battle took place. This was one of the major battles of the Restauração, which effectively ended Spain’s attempt to undo Portuguese independence, finally recognized in 1668. The Spanish had overrun southern Portugal under the leadership of D. Juan de Austria, natural son of Philip IV of Spain. The Portuguese, reinforced by English troops and led by Schomberg, inflicted heavy casualties and forced the Spanish to retreat across the border to Badajoz. The Spanish garrison at… Read More

Rio de Janeiro, Typographia Universal de Laemmert, 1841.. FIRST EDITION. 12°, contemporary green cloth (heavily wormed, defective at foot of spine, worn at corners, front cover detached, other binding defects), spine and covers with gilt fillets. Wormholes throughout, mostly small and round, not affecting legibility of text. A working copy only. Blue imperial stamp on p. 5. 134 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST EDITION of this anthology. The first part (pp. 5-65) is Sousa Caldas' Poesias sacras, the second his Poesias profanas. After them are two odes by José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva and other poems of Francisco Manuel Garção e Ferreira. Sousa Caldas (b. 1762), an Arcadian, was "o mais vigoroso lírico dos predecessores imediatos do romantismo" (Veríssimo p. 114). He was imprisoned in 1781 by the Inquisition on grounds of being "herege, naturalista, deísta e blasfemo" - apparently because he was influenced by Rousseau. Eventually he took orders and began writing sacred poetry. In 1808 he returned… Read More

Good to very good condition. Early manuscript foliation in ink. (1 l.) *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Valdivieso, a judge who had been maligned in print by José Agustin de la Rosa y Herrera, here explains that Rosa y Herrera came to his court after a priest accused him of insulting him and blaspheming. Valdivieso then discovered that the accused had run off with an innocent young woman and had been living with her in poverty in Santiago. He sent the young woman to a decent home, assigned 15 days of community service to Rosa y Herrera, and released him on his own recognizance to return to his family. The next Valdivieso heard of him was when Rosa y Herrera published a scurrilous attack on him. Valdivieso (d. 1839), a lawyer, was named a judge in criminal court in 1828. Two years later he was named to the Corte Suprema.… Read More
