This is a presentation copy, inscribed by Van Doren on the front endpaper to his brother and sister-in-law: "to Frank and Grace from Mark, September 21, 1928". Frank was one of the non-literary Van Dorens who remained in the family's home state of Illinois where he was a farmer.
