London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. The most controversial novel by Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964), banned in Boston. Van Vechten was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance who intended the book to be a celebration of Harlem and its Black culture. This is a Near Fine copy of the First English Edition, designated the Fifth Impression on the scarce dustwrapper. Tan cloth binding, ruled on the front cover, with gilt titling on the spine. Clean text; 286 pages (includes a Glossary of Negro Words and Phrases). Very clean, bright, and fresh.
