Description:
In about 1810, Isaac Eddy established an engraving shop in Greenbush, Vermont. This was the beginning of an improbable yet very successful map, globe and illustrated book industry in rural Vermont over the next forty years. Eddy's best-known apprentice was Lewis Robinson, who achieved considerable success as a mapmaker. George White was another apprentice, although very little is known about him. While Eddy and Robinson are discussed in Ristow's American Maps and Mapmakers, there is no mention of White at all. His entire cartographic output was apparently confined to this map and a companion map of New Hampshire. The map -- a very small wall map issued with rollers -- has a basic, almost primitive feel. Perhaps this accounted for White's apparent lack of success as a mapmaker. An interesting and fairly scarce Vermont map from an unheralded member of the "Greenbush group." Reference: Cobb: Vermont Maps Prior to 1900: 263. Condition: About 11 1/8 x 7 1/2." Map conserved by Green… Read more

Description:
Hand-colored lithograph. Minor foxing; a bit of edge wear. Image area: 8 x 11." Sheet size: 12 x 16 ½."This beautifully colored view of St. John in the then-Danish Virgin Islands features two island residents cooking al fresco at the center foreground. In the mid-distance is substantial dwelling on a hilltop. Further in the distance are the forms of neighboring islands, likely St. Thomas or Tortola. Baerentzen (1799-1869) was a prominent Copenhagen portraitist who turned his attention and talents to lithography in 1837. He published a series of six views of the Danish Virgin Islands (two of St. Thomas, two of St. Croix and two of St. John) in 1856 as part of Danmark, a 31-plate compilation of scenes and landscapes of Denmark and its colonies. The six Virgin Islands views, including the currently offered view, are among the earliest available views of the islands. Reference: Reps, Views and Viewmakers of Urban America: 4098.

Description:
[Copenhagen]: Em. Baerentzen & Co. lith Inst., Lithographer: A. Nay; artist: F.G. Melby, ca. 1856. Hand-colored lithograph. Some foxing. Minor soiling at lower right blank margin. Slight edge wear. Image area: 9 3/8 x 11 1/8." Sheet size: 12 x 16 ½." This lovely, lush view of Cruz Bay on St. John in the then-Danish Virgin Islands focuses on a substantial building set on a hill above the harbor. The building may be a manor house. Or possibly this is Lind Point Fort that was constructed by the British in 1807 to control access to Cruz Bay during their occupation of the Danish West Indies. A two-masted schooner is shown under sail just to the left of the two palm trees, and several figures are engaged in daily activities throughout the view.
